Half of Afghanistan Taliban leadership arrested in Pakistan

Postby Twisted_Logic » Thu Feb 25, 2010 6:17 am

MONITOR EXCLUSIVE: Pakistan officials told the Monitor they have arrested nearly half – 7 of 15 – members of the Afghan Taliban's senior leadership council in recent days, including the Taliban head of military operations in Afghanistan.

Plain clothed police move a Pakistan Taliban commander from the Bajaur region through the halls of the Police Crime Investigation Department on Feb. 17. Nearly half the Afghanistan Taliban leadership have been apprehended in the past week, according to Pakistani intelligence officials.

This will incur a devastating blow to the extremist groups in not just Somalia, but throughout the Muslim World. Once their base is overrun and top leadership eliminated, the low-level leaders and the foot-soldiers will be crushed or forced to lay down arms. The capture of the Al Qaida thugs is now most certainly a matter of When and not IF

Why were they all in Pakistan? Was there some sort of Talibani wedding or something?

No. The Talibs run away from "jihad" and used Pakistan as a hiding zone. They are now being arrested. What for? Time will tell.

US drones and the latest and most advanced fighter jets against a group of angry AK-47 wielding shepherds doesn't constitute as a fair fight.

Neither does suicide bombing your way into mosques, schools, hospitals and marketplaces. The talibs are the last ones to cry about bullying and fair-fight. Their oppression of the Afghani people are well documented.

I'm not supporting these maniacs, I'm just saying level the playing field a little. Their tactics are despicable and horrendous, but they are only slightly worse than the cockups and howlers of the US army when they take out a whole village just to kill two taliban fighters hiding there. They have the most advanced weaponry ever,, yet their tacticsa are still the pathetic "Shoot first, ask questions later". What do they call it "friendly fire"? Ain't nothing friendly about drones indiscriminantly killing people when in theory they should be more accurate.

Collateral damage can not be avoided in war. The best you can do is minimize it. The US Military is doing a good job in minimizing collateral damage as much as possible. They have to. The end of this war is to win minds and hearts. You can't do this through high levels of collateral damage and they get the point. If you read the news, you will realize that the kill probability of the drones have increased substantially while the collateral damage has been minimized to a great extent. The drone sorties from the past 6 or so months have been phenomenal in reducing civilians causalities while punishing the extremists.

This is a cause for optimism. Before the extremists are forced into the negotiating table, you have to cripple their ability to wage wars and destroy the belief that they can win. The drones and the anticipated surge are contributions to that vision
