I've chewed khat with a group of Somali men, of which there is a large population not for from where I live in Manchester. Their social activity is to sit around in a circle, chew and chat furiously as the drug gives a greater fluency of their expression. The effects are mild compared to many drugs and consequently the after effects are also slight. It could be easily said that Europeans drink all night and the next day they are useless at work; certainly in my experience a hangover from booze is far more debilitating than anything khat can do.

Picking on a minority group and banning aspects of their social life is gutless and typical of politicians. If your policy ideas had any coherence, you'd be banning cigarettes & alcohol, but power is always more seductive to politicians than logic or common sense."

Should be banned inshallah. Conservatives, current favourites to win the election want to ban it, one of their first pledges. Sayeeda warsa, a muslim lady who is a baroness and conservative minister met with somali women and wants to ban it. Read her article here:

pretty good read, be sure to read the comments. Cadaan folks are anti govt legislation and involvement, even though they dont chew, the speak out in favour of khat, read the comments lol.

At the same time Khat is a huge tax revenue for the govt, people underestimate it. It comes in by the tonnes a day and is imported through foreign produce (fruit and veg), which has a high tax rate compared to domestic produce. No such thing as seasonal with khat, shit is guaranteed to come in at least 5 times a week.

The government should def commision a deep study into the potential of banning khat, also potential implications, as many young somalis could fall into harder drugs.

Many scientist are against banning khat though, they say its a minor drug, not even comparable to cannabis.

the conservative don’t care about Qaat, as matter of fact no political party cares about this drug. They are using it for political tool because of the Elections. You know how much money the government need to spend each year on banning qaad, monitoring etc etc? Don’t have exact figures but probably millions. They won’t do it unless they see it’s in their interest too. Now!! these people who want to see qaad ban have to come up with some sort of suggestion that banning qaad is not just good for the Somali community but Britain in general. Unless they come up with something that shows it helps the whole country, it won’t be banned, or easy to be banned. That! Or they have to have huge sums of money, and/or the support of national and international organisations. I heard the NHS is funding this one. Hopefully will see how it goes.

if khat is banned, there be a civil war in southall. so count yourself lucky as khat will not be banned. however, some politicians may use it to get votes from islamo and wadaado and cocerned folks.

Horta, why are Somalis in denial when told qat is an addictive drug?? Does anyone take the time to asses why they get withdrwal symptoms. I have heard the increase of luekemia like symptoms in somali men is due to qat??? And now, shisha has become the hip thing to do among women too.

Not really a political tool, that would suggest that either the somalis are significant enough to actually care about or that the english people actually know about khat, let alone care for it. Nothing at all to do with the elections as banning khat will not affect the way anyone votes.

Khat will not be banned simply because it is not worth the effort and money, for a recreational drug used by a small minority of people. How many people are admitted into hospital with Khat related illnesses? how much does this cost the NHS, absolutley nothing, hence why they dont care about it and why it wont be banned.

Idellay though i'd like to see it banned inshallah

If it is banned then most likely it will be a class C drug classification, basically lax in the sense noone will be imprisoned for it. But the good thing is it wont be landing in heathrow by the tonnes as is now.

khat will still come to the UK even if it's banned, but a lil shrub will cost about 40 euro and shid and like the states when it arrives will be 25 months old.

Prohibition against a popular and socially central thing like Qaat will be about as effective as it was against Alcohol in America.

I'm kind of sitting on the fence here, on one hand i want it banned because the abusers have abused it beyond any limits while on the other hand i feel sorry for those that sit down once at the end of a busy week. To me and a few of my friends it was an alternative to going clubbing on a Friday night and for the most part was succesfull.
