Reading the Bible

Postby Shirib » Tue Mar 23, 2010 2:51 pm

I read in another thread, in a post by Murux that reading the Bible, Torah, or any other religions text is haraam. With respect to Murux he did mention a hadith but did not really go into at all.

So is reading other religions texts haraam in Islam?

I don't believe so. By increasing your knowledge of other religions, you are better able to appreciate yours.

I don't believe so, Umar (ra) use to read the toroah

And I've never heard anyone say Ahmed Deedat was doing something haraam.

MadMay,

Why did you delete your comment ? The Injiil is a very moving piece of writing.

I remember a sheikh on Islam channel said that studying another religion before you've studied your own is not good but he explained it from a common sense point of view i.e. confusion and did not mention any hadith.

It's interesting to read all the contradictions in the Bible. But yes if it's haram may God forgive us.

Skippa,

The book of Titus was quite controversial. I never understood how it told slaves to obey their masters

The one thing I got to give credit to the Christians is their translation of their Bible into many different languages.

I don’t think is haraam to read the bible, but you had to ask yourself why you want to read the bible. To teach other people miyaa? mise to debate with Christians who say Jesus was son of god that he wasn’t? and bring proof to show them how wrong they were. That the bible was changed from its original text many times and because is gone through so many hands we don’t know who’s written the bible. worse still, the Books Allah has revealed to Musa and Isa do not exist now in the original form and language. Christianity contradicts its self too much, so if you reading the bible to gain better understanding of why Christianity is the way it is, is ok i guess, but you have to have strong imaan and knowledge of Islam before you do that because at weak times shaydhaan preys on people and will create shaki in your heart.

Whether u say it's xaraam or not, provide proofs to substantiate your claim. We gotta stay away from this "personally, I feel..." cuz Islam is not up to our own interpretation and what we think it should be like.

I went to school with some central/west african born-again christians who'd constantly badger me about their christian foolishness so I wanted to have an educated opinion about their holy book

We had a bible at home, it was part of a huge collection of books on different subjects. To us it was just a book among many. I used the read what to me was a chapter titled Proverbs, thinking I would learn proverbs lol!
Now, I have no clue if it is haram or not. I doubt it is , but then I don't have a reference/hadith handy to post.
