Djibouti (HOL)The Somali under 17 team took to the football pitch against Kenya in the first round of the prequalifying tournament of the CAF U17 tournament at Guled Stadium in Djibouti. Although it was technically a home game for Somalia, the game was played in Djibouti due to ongoing violence in Somalia.

The two teams displayed a high level of talent in a well balanced game. At the shock of most in attendance, Somali drew first blood with an early goal by Jabril Mohamed at 16 minutes into the game. Although the Somalis had many further opportunities to push their lead, the game remained 1-0 at half time.

Somalia did not slow out the gate and scored their second goal at the 56th minute. The fans in attendance were predominantly Djibouti and therefore showed their support for the Somalis, who now had a 2-0 lead. The Somalis continued to take the
game to the Kenyan’s with a cleverly worked corner that was headed by Mohamed Hassan Ali (Shino) which gave Somalia a commanding 3-0 lead.

Towards the end of the game Kenya was awarded a free kick with which they scored. That made the final score 3-1.

The pivotal win brings Somalia one step closer to the CAF- U-17 tournament in Rwanda 2011. Although they have a long way to go, the best four teams of the CAF will qualify for the U-17 World Cup to be hold in Mexico in 2011. Their next opponent is Egypt in the first leg of the qualifying tournament. That game will take place in late August.

The second leg of this round will take place in Nairobi in two weeks time.

This victory will definitely raise the morale of the team and the Somali people who typically do not receive good news from their homeland.

Saturday, April 24, 2010

The Somali National U 17 football squad has qualified for the second round of African youth qualifying match, after a hotly contested game between Kenyan-Somali youngsters ended in 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon.

Kenya needed a 2-0 win to eliminate Somalia which humiliated Kenya 3-1 in the first leg of the competition which took place in Djibouti on April 9 and with today’s draw Somalia has promoted for the second round of the CAF youth championships.

The match was due to take place at the Kasarani stadium in Nairobi, but was later transferred to the Oserian stadium in Naivasha due to unidentified reasons.

The head of Somali delegation Amir Abdi Hassan who talked to reporters after the game ended said that they were based at a hotel which is very far from the stadium and they traveled just 90 kilometers to the stadium before the game kick off on Saturday.

“Praise be to Allah this is a tangible success for us, because we have eliminated them from the competition, although we were playing minus one” the head of Somali delegation said.

“In the 40th minute of the first half of the game Mohamed Hashi siyad was given the red card and that didn’t disappoint my boys, they redoubled their efforts and as the result the game ended in draw” he added.

Mr. Amir said that the atmosphere was very cold, but the Somali youngsters who were committed to qualifying for the second round made every possibility to upgrade their flag and the name of Somalia.

In the next round Somali U 17 will face Egypt, a leading football power in the African continent on August 27 this year. The 2011 CAF U 17 competition will take place in Rwanda next year.

The loss to Somalia in Saturday’s Africa Junior under-17 championships was the lowest point our football standards have ever gone.

For how can a country that boasts of peace and stability and thousands of talented youth go down to an unstable, war-ravaged country?

Watching Somalia play the match at Oserian Stadium, it was evident that despite their domestic problems, the team was more organised and had every intention to get the victory.

The Kenyan side was on the other hand, scrappy to say the least, and considering reports of lack of training venue that dogged the team during the week, one is not surprised that they got what they deserved.

The blame falls squarely on Football Kenya Limited’s (FKL) feet once again, for gambling with national duty and bringing shame to the country.

In their characteristic nature, the company once again entered a team in an international event just for the sake of it and had no intention of giving the squad good preparations.

It is obvious that FKL officials will not be moved to resign for bringing national shame to this country. It is now high time the Government stepped in and took action against inept systems even at the expense of a Fifa ban on the country.

We should also withdraw from all the remaining international competitions starting with the under-20 Africa Junior championships until a competent body is found to run local football.

Now is the time to take action and restore our country’s pride. Is the Sports Minister listening?
