The life expectancy of someone in the gangs is not long. Unfortuanely, several things contributed to the downtrend that the lifes of these young Somali men had taken. Miraculously, the ladies are not affected. It is only the males.
1) They were raised in the ghetos and the only things that are available in the ghetos are drugs, high school drop-outs, lack of father figure in the homes, and depency of welfare hand-outs. This seems to be an apedemic in all Somali communities in Canada, USA, and Western Europe.
2) Most of these young men were from Ontario and had moved to Alberta after they were misled by gang leaders that they can easily make money and they will not be known in the 1st months since they are not from Alberta. Once the other gangs learned about them, they become history. One by one they started to disappear.
Unfortunately, many more will follow suit until the community addresses the local factors which are producing endless boys for drug leaders. It looks like we are becoming factories which produce more boys for the drug trade in the west. Believe or not, if you visit the correctional facilities of the cities which have large Somali population, you will be surprised how many young men in these prisons. I remember in Ohio in 2007, the local courts had the cases of over 400 Somali children, the majority of these cases were young men with some of form of violent and drug related charges. Many of them were convicted of those crimes. Only Allah knows how many will come out with good behavior. If the child comes out of the prison, every where he goes, he is bringing the criminal record with him and it is hard from him to find a job. If he goes to Somalia or other parts of East Africa, people will claim he went to ..... I don't have to mention where they will assume he wengt to and the name of the child will be in the news. They really find themselves in a situation which beyond their control. The mothers are not at fault 'cause they have to get support from the system due to the lack of father figure in the home and the number of children the family get in the marriage, and it is not the fault of the child to grow up in a ghetto. So, the Somali folks here in SNET, this is your community that found itself in these conditions and sooner you realize and help the better. I would not really take advantage of their plight and call them names. I pray for their well-being and hope the best for them.
