The loss to Somalia in Saturday’s Africa Junior under-17 championships was the lowest point our football standards have ever gone.
For how can a country that boasts of peace and stability and thousands of talented youth go down to an unstable, war-ravaged country?
Watching Somalia play the match at Oserian Stadium, it was evident that despite their domestic problems, the team was more organised and had every intention to get the victory.
The Kenyan side was on the other hand, scrappy to say the least, and considering reports of lack of training venue that dogged the team during the week, one is not surprised that they got what they deserved.
The blame falls squarely on Football Kenya Limited’s (FKL) feet once again, for gambling with national duty and bringing shame to the country.
In their characteristic nature, the company once again entered a team in an international event just for the sake of it and had no intention of giving the squad good preparations.
It is obvious that FKL officials will not be moved to resign for bringing national shame to this country. It is now high time the Government stepped in and took action against inept systems even at the expense of a Fifa ban on the country.
We should also withdraw from all the remaining international competitions starting with the under-20 Africa Junior championships until a competent body is found to run local football.
Now is the time to take action and restore our country’s pride. Is the Sports Minister listening?
