memorizing the bible.....

Postby TheLoFather » Mon May 31, 2010 5:13 pm

Earlier today while launching with some friends we got into theological discussions(dont know how or why we just found our selves in it), the following question came up and i wonder whether you could enlighten us.

Is it permissible for a Muslim to read and memorize the christian bible or the jewish torah?

for what purpose?

it depends why you would want to read the bible. if you live amongst christians and jewish people and would like to learn more about their beliefs in order to teach them about yours(islam) then it is not only permissible but is encouraged.

for any other reason xaraam.

is quite pointless really, since what they have today isnt the true words of God, i.e. the Torah and Injiil. so basically you will end up reading bunch of lies. lies that tell you one minute prophet David (Daud) was good soldier who fought against Jaluut, next he slept with his best friend's wife, and said to his soldiers, when you go to the field today to fight against Jaluut's army make sure you leave so and so behind (the women who he slept with's husband + Daud's best friend), in that way he gets killed and Daud takes his wife. Subhanalaah. lies like prophet Nuux waa alcoholic who at the same time happen to build an ark full of Earth's creatures...etc etc.

thread starter, is depends why you want to read the bible? are you sheekh whos purpose is to debate with the Christians, are you doing it for greater good or own selfish purpose? plus do you know the Quran, by heart and its meaning? i wouldnt advice you do read the bible unless you know the Quran very well.

well, you're actually proving my point(perhaps inadvertently). it appears you've acquired knowledge of the subject in question(the bible/torah) and have arrived at the conclusion that it is "pointless"..........

was your intentions for gaining this knowledge of scholarly pursuits, for a more meaningful discourse with people of other faiths...or out of selfish tendencies to further your personal knowledge?...... whatever your purpose, you are no doubt in possession of some form of know how regarding biblical texts........point being, wouldn't you prefer others(ie the poster) to channel similar avenue of learning for his own enlightnment....i think we're all entitled to that...

ps, i do agree with you that learning about other faiths should be in conjunction with the pursuit/intent to further/enhance knowledge of Islam and Qoran.

U can't memorize the bible in its totality, even if you wanted to. Its too long and has no rhythmic pattern, its close to impossible

^ Shirib's right!

Bible = Bibliosis = Latin word for Book. Thats all it is: A book. No prohibition to reading this Holy "book", but ud have helluva hard time with the picking which "one" to read :? For starters: To which dominion of Christianity would it belong? What "version" of that bible would u read? Which "Edition" of that version? What "volume" of that Edition? Which "book" of that Volume, etc, etc, ETC! :?

Point being: No such thing as "the bible", Proper. Similar to the way we have "THE" "One" and "only" Qur'an out there. Judeo-Christians have been messing with a collection of TAINTED, & "Chopped and Skewed" Series for so many centuries, its now worth as little as the paper its written on. Not even their own Priests memorize it in its entirety; let alone encourage their congregations to do it. They say its for fear of "confusing" the ordinary worshipper, who'd be better off singing Gospel songs from a book of made up "hymns", worship songs or biblical stories as told to them. Only people who have access are of course the higher ranking scholars/priests or those priests to be at seminary schools. Surprise then that the highest rate of Muslim reverts are Them: The priests or those who were very religious and had aspirations of once become a clergy? :)

Anyway; For what it'd be worth in whatever arguments ud wanna engage in, though: instead of the whole thing: Memorize a few concepts, and find out especially about those notoriously contradictory verses. In fact, Learn them and then cite them verbatim in arguments, which would then maybe help Guide many on the right path. :)

Absolutely  If you memorized the Koran, it is also wise to memorize what other faiths have..Specially if you are into religion discussion with others...How can you debate with people if you are ignorant?

Ahmed Dedat..Knew both the Bible and the koran even though he was a convert..

Amethyst - Somali pirates = Israeli navy  That's messed up.

The pirates that needs exposure are the Nigerian pirates. Two years ago, they were trailing behind the Somali pirates in the PIRACY LEAGUE. Indonesian pirates are up there too.
