lol @ arcadefire, you have cornered him.
Navy Turkey was forced into secularism and the west. If you look at Modern day Turkey compared to modern arab countries today, you could make that assertion to a degree. But if we look at that Turkey was the center of the muslim world politically, economically, educationally; then from that perspective of Turkey now and Turkey over hundred years ago no they are not doing too well.
I am not following you, what are you trying to say here? Are you saying Turkey was better off in the past because they used arabic script?

Oh I see, well I was referring to the latin script they adopted back in 1928 and many argued that it was a good move. The Islamic empire was a dead lion, so a new image and new blood for Turkey was much needed. And I disagree with you, Turkey today is better than Turkey of the last two hundred years.

Yeah, Siad Barre did piss off the Saudis with this decision to use the Latin script. But then again, Somalia entered the Arab League in 1974 and the Arabic language became the second official language.

Was to use the latin script as the basis of written language. It was a terrible mistake, and we should of used the arabic one, but instead they fell for the western illusion.

actually thats not true, the only reason the writing of Af-Somali was delayed for an entire decade(till 1972) was because of the collective affair we were having with the idea of writing af somali in Arabic script, even through arabic characters proved to pose technical difficulties and couldnt express many phonetics like (dh) and long vowels (aa,uu,ee,oo,ii)k. even the option of modifying and assignging extra shaqal to certain words to denote its prounciation has failed, cuz the linguists later realized they were makin things too complicated even for the arabic learned wadaads, let alone the illiterate waranle.
the only foreigner involved in qoraalka af soomaliga was B. W. Andrzejewski, the famous polish anthropologist, who translated many Somali poems. he introduced the usage of double letters in longer vowels, which is somewhat similar to that of his native polish tongue.
besides, Arabic script is way overrated and wont give u results alone, look @ Iranians& Pakis.they might write in Arabic, but when it comes to classical Arabic they get back in line like everyone-else.

All the scripts used today in the west and middle east are from the same origin, byblos.
The Phoenician alphabet is the source of all of them including the vaious arabic scripts.
The LAtin script is based on the Greek script which is based on the Phoenician script..
I would have gone for the arabic script for somalia, why?
because it was already well known due to the quran.
every nomad child in the bush was being taught the quran, they could have easily been taught to read and write somali .
You could have had universal literacy very quickly.
