Mogadishu, Somalia (AHN) - The transitional federal government of Somalia Friday praised the breakaway republic of Somaliland and Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Puntland for their fights against Al Qaeda-linked groups and individuals in Somalia.
During the last few months, the administrations of Somaliland and Puntland have conducted several operations against radical Islamists in the mountainous areas of the Sanag region between the two administrations, said a statement from the transitional government’s ministry of information.
“In mid October, Puntland managed to crush radical Islamic militias led by Mohammed Sa’id Atom in the mountainous Galgala areas just outside of Bosaso town,” the ministry said.
Atom has a history of crime in Somaliland and Puntland. He is believed to have been involved in kidnappings, arms trafficking and assassinations inside Somalia.
The operations had been great success for Somalia, since terrorists and their cruel acts had been prevented, according to the statement.
Atom is believed to have links with Al Shabaab, which the U.S. alleges to be al Qaeda's proxy in the Horn of Africa nation. Atom's assets were frozen by the United States in April when he was designated a terrorist by Washington.
Last month, Somaliland security forces said they had thwarted an Al Shabaab terrorist attack.
