Yes, i think before the war, there was a strong sense of identity as Somalis and thus no feeling of threat or fear, when there is strong identification with nationalism, you will find less religious rhetoric and vice versa. Just like the working class in Europe who have irrational fear of Islam because they have identity issues due to abandoning the church, breakdown of communities. So they cling to sentiments of nationalism. They only know hatred when they meet someone who is outwardly different to them ie language, dress, distinct culture, religion. But education plays the biggest part.

Really? Pre-1969 where everything was based on tribe and affinities? Instead of even going as far as Christians where was tolerance for Madhibaan, Somali Bantu, and other foreigners? Post-1969 Somalia where the vice president of the nation and defense minister was of the lowest caste and where women could get their inheritance individually rather than through clan or people could worship in their places of worship was the most tolerant of any period of Somalia.
