Do good practising muslims get depressed?

Postby Warsan_Star_Muslimah » Mon Dec 20, 2010 6:43 pm

Salaam to all,

I once saw this subject being discussed on Snet and but I did not join the discussion. One of the reason why I did not join was because I did not want to speak about something I knew little about. However, I did believe in depression and that muslims can get depressed but what about PRACTISING ones? Well I stumbled upon this lecture discussing exactly that! And what a refreshing subject too. I'm tired of muslims who don't believe in mental-illness, depression or even jiins (which at this point becomes an aqeedah issue). The fact that they always believe mental illness is from something 'bad' a person did! No, it can be GENETICS too!

The Sheikh even spoke about "drinking the ayats of the quran after having written it and washed it off," and you know what? It is Sunnah!

Allah the Almighty said; “And We send down, of the Quran, that which is a healing and a mercy to the believers.” (Israa/82)

وننزل من القرآن ما هو شفاء ورحمة للمؤمنين) الإسراء 82

At one point he recites a story (authenticity is doubted) about a great king, that sent the Prophet muhammed (pbuh) a physician as a gift, and he pbuh said, "we don't need a physician, we don't eat much!" :) A fine reply, eh? And today doctors and nutritionist and ANYONE that knows anything about health care and the body would say 'eating too much' is one of the MAIN reasons for loads of illnesses.

Anywho listen to it on youtube:

Depression, Mental illness and Possession

1)

2)

3)

4)

p.s. The panel of speakers vary as well. One is a introductory sheikh, the other sheikh deals with possession, and a doctor to speak about the depression and mental-illness! I forgot the last one though. Lol

An amazing self help type books for muslims is "dont be sad" by Sh. Aa'id Qarni. If you are suffering from sadness/depression, low self esteem/self confidence, laziness, whatever, this is the best book. Another excellent book to supplement it "Live your life" by Sh. mohamed al arifi. Both books are available online.

People are just ignorant of the Religion, and yet they have these views of it that hardly anyone can live up too. Is it then a wonder that they fail to practice it on the pretext that they can't live up to it, though they pretend this isn't the reason.

ASC sister

Practising Muslims can get depression but wat I've experienced is dat it's usually wen u start practising that you get the depression as the shaytans don't want you getting closer to Allah(SWT). Quran is a shiifa as the ayat you qouted as said .. But read da dua book fortrous(sp?) of the Muslim there is a dua for laziness and depression and make sure you put surah al baqarah on in your house everyday walal as it stops evil comin in to your home.

Hopefully that should be enough to cure the depression inshallah

I think people need to understand that Depression isn't just one kind, I mean just thinking of some of the ways it can be are this:
1. Depression of the spirit; because of a loss, a lack of socialization etc
2. Depression of the mind; due to a brain chemical imbalance
3. Depression of the heart; which is the I see it as a spiritual disease and most people aren't aware of it.
4. Depression of the body; because you are not getting enough sunlight, the right food intake etc.

I believe depression exists. There are two types of depression. Chemical depression and circumstantial depression. The first one, is a serious one of course. Bi polar people and manic depressed people suffer that. It is not a choice but something part of someones internal chemical imbalance.Someones' psychology and physiognomy. The other type of depression is, circumstantial depression, purely from self inflict. It is a mind frame deal.Usually stems from the want of something or the lack of something,or unresolved childhood trauma that one dwells into alot.(which is the one u have warsaan, get over the childhood molestation) But i do believe Muslims with great imaan suffer less from depression. No matter the first or the second depression. The more you have a higher imaan, and less western education--the happier u r and not depressed.

The more practising one is the more the Shaydaan gets out of his way to doom him/her.. Therefore despression amongst this group does exist and it's infact pretty high.. :|

Westlesbo

Go to your family elder women or men, and ask them about Sheikhs and Sheydaan. They will tell u that--sheydaan promised God that he will corrupt the children of Sheikhs, since it is very difficult to get to the sheikh. But we are not talking about sins here--we are talking about depression and sadness. high imaan people, like Sheikhs do not suffer depression that much. its facts.

West can you elaborate more... A few disagreements, one is that as muslims we don't believe that the shaydaan has any power, or can do anything to you except whispers. Two, the more you are aligned with the beloved sunnah of Rasul'lah the more protected you are in the fortress of Allah which the shaydaan has no means of getting to you. Three, people who have stronger faiths are actually less likely to depression and those who meditate (dhikr, salat) are less prone to mental illnesses. Despite this we are also taught that as ones faith is stronger the stronger the tribulations that Allah makes that person go through, but Allah never burdens a soul with that which he can't bare.
And if people still fall into depression, it can also be a physical mental condition to do with diet, hormones, lack of nutrition, or sunlight etc. And that can be treated appropriately. But first we have to understand the causes of it to know the cure.
