QUITO, Ecuador -- The Ecuadorean government is the latest in Latin American to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state.
The Foreign Ministry says in a statement that President Rafael Correa officially recognized Palestine on Friday as "free and independent, with its borders since 1967."
It says he sent a message to that effect to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Ecuador joins Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba and Venezuela in supporting an independent Palestine with borders recognized prior to the 1967 Mideast war.

Voltage don´t hold your breath on this as most of latin america is centre-right or right. Chavismo wave will not be sustainable in the long run, especially in a place like Ecuador whose monetary is US Dollars. This in addition to the regional stability as UNASUR body will not allow it. I doubt Lula´s last minute popularity move to recognize Palestine will mean much for the rest of the region. Let´s hope this isn´t another Correa popularity move now that the indigenous block is turning against him. President Correa is charismatic and should use his period left as a President emulating his northern neighbor and concentrate on investments and improving the country´s rating.
Speaking of Palestine issue, it can only be resolved in the Middle East.

Aguardiente you are wrong. Brazil would not have declared without knowing if the rest of Latin America would follow and the rest of Latin America would not have declared without their regional superpower giving them cover. Any coincidence a day after Brazil, Argentina declared? This wasn't a last minute move by Lula. The next Brazil president is the most closest person to him in his government and the person he picked as his heir. Besides the State of Palestine is now recognized by all the upcoming superpowers. China recognizes it, so does Russia, India, and now Brazil. Most of Africa, Eastern Europe, and now Latin America. Mexico is expected next and even Israel said if Mexico does, the wave will be unstoppable. To be recognized as a state you need 3/4 of member states voting for you. It is close to that number now which is why Israel calls Salam Fayyad's diplomacy "soft intifada".
This is exactly how Apartheid south Africa went down. First the third world, then eastern countries, finally Western Europe then America. ceeb Cheney was voting Mandela as a terrorist in the 80's when Britain was putting sanctions.
The fight is now going towards Europe. Norway which is not part of EU just upgraded the Palestinian representative to "Ambassador" this month and Germany put a proposal that calls for EU recognition of a Palestinian state in pre-1967 borders. America of course will be last.

Voltage we shall see sxb. I personally am not buying into this until the likes of Chile, which has the largest Palestinian population in America Latina recognizes it. It along with Colombia, Panama, Mexico & maybe India hold the key. Please do link where you heard India officially recognized Palestinian State?
I see China´s move as nothing more than to counter US/Northern EU interests. As someone who has been to Ecuador let me tell you the country is in serious dire need for FDI and this action today is nothing more than a power play by the president. This will be dealt a 100% blow if Colombia joins the asia-pacific trade block APEC as Ecuador is one of its biggest trading partners.

No offence bro but on google search there is nothing mention of this in any other media portal which makes me suspicious of right-center leaning american politica blog. They could be sensetionalising the matter just like Huffington Post does it all the time.
