As a long time al shabaab supporter, I can't deny or keep pretending they are something they aren't, over the years, I have giving them the benefit of the doubt and excused their hideous crimes and acts, not to mention their hypocrisy and kept telling myself, it's only human to make mistakes, just give them one more chance to redeem themselves, but unfortunately that day never came and never will. Now to answer your legit sincere question, I believe they didn't rise against the former regime out of pure cowardness, how else would you explain it, and yes al shabab existed back than, they were formerly known as al itixaad, and to answer your other question why they didn't defend Hargeysa? they are not a qabiilist walaal. :|

This isn't even a semi intelligent question

But to answer your question, Ceyrow was 33 when he was killed. Abu Mansuur is 40 years old, Ali Dheere, Godane are around the same age group. That means in 1988 they were teenagers and in their early 20's when the regime was overthrown.

Do you really expect people in their teens and early 20's to rebel against a dowlad, or fight Aidiid then. U do know that Shabaab means youth right.

The OP should do some research and learn how the wadaad movement began, who is holding its ropes and how it got to were it is today. Much of the Ikhwaan movement during the SB regime was underground, just as it is today in many countries such as Jordan, Libya, etc.
