Asmara — In line with the ongoing coordinated endeavors towards controlling and preventing the spread of malaria infection, over 1 million new mosquito nets have been distributed to all the administrative regions, according to Dr. Tewolde Gebremeskel, head of national malaria control unit in the Health Ministry.
He noted that distribution of mosquito nets and raising public awareness regarding the methods to prevent malaria are among the imperative factors in controlling the epidemic. Dr. Tewolde further indicated that the move is aimed at replacing the old nets with the new one, besides further expanding its use.
He further stated that the distribution program would be undertaken with special emphasis on high malaria-risk zones in accordance with the number of family members. In this connection, Dr. Tewolde underlined the need for redoubling efforts so as to register still more gratifying outcome in controlling the disease.
He also highlighted the need for covering up mosquito breeding spots and holes taking into account the good distribution of rainfall, in addition to properly utilizing the newly available mosquito nets purchased at substantial government expenditure.
It is to be noted that Eritrea is one of the few countries in the world that managed to reduce mortality rate resulting from malaria infection by 85%.
