The goverment of Somalia meets the goverment of Italy

Postby Coeus » Sat Jan 08, 2011 10:20 am

Somalia’s transitional government has met with the Italian government over issues Somali refugees in Italy are facing, Somalia’s ambassador for Italy said Friday.

In an interview with a local radio station, the ambassador, Nur Hassan Hussein, said he met with a number of Italian officials to alleviate the starvation of Somalis in Italy who are not able to get government aid.

Hussein stated the refugees, who fled their country because of endless civil war, face many problems as they encounter a language and culture different from theirs.

“There are a number of Somali refugees who live in the building of Somalia’s former embassy in Rome. They live a poor life,” the ambassador was quoted as saying.

Hussein said he talked to Rome officials about how Somali refugees could be helped as there was no hope for peace in Somalia in the foreseeable future.

“Italy authorities are now holding different meetings to address the problem of Somalis,” Hussein said.

He noted that Rome gives residence ID cards to Somalis to live in Italy.

The ambassador's comments come two days after Radio Netherlands revealed that some 120 Somali refugees live in Somalia’s embassy in Rome

Since the fall of Somalia’s powerful central rule led by Maj. Gen. Mohammed Siad Barre, Somalia has been embroiled in lawlessness, two decades of internecine war and droughts and famine that have claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. About 1 million Somalis are said to live outside the country.
