Islam and Somalia before and under Siyad barre rule

Postby Coeus » Sun Jan 09, 2011 2:50 pm

The role of religious functionaries began to shrink in the 1950s and 1960s as some of their legal and educational powers and responsibilities were transferred to secular authorities. The position of religious leaders changed substantially after the 1969 revolution and the introduction of scientific socialism. Siad Barre insisted that his version of socialism was compatible with Quranic principles, and he condemned atheism. Religious leaders, however, were warned not to meddle in politics.

The new government instituted legal changes that some religious figures saw as contrary to Islamic precepts. The regime reacted sharply to criticism, executing some of the protesters (see Islam in the Colonial Era and After , this ch.). Subsequently, religious leaders seemed to accommodate themselves to the government

All his laws were perfectly compatible with Islam. Off with heads of those self anointed religious leaders who try to usurp political power from the secular authorities.

On 23kii January 1975 ten clerics (Ulema) were executed in public by the Dictator Siyad Barre.
These were

1 - Sheekh Axmed Sh. Maxamed
2 - Sheekh Muuse Yuusuf
3 - Sheekh Axmed Iimaan
4 - Cali Xasan Warsame
5 - Xasan Ciise Iley
6 - Maxamed Siyaad Xirsi
7 - Cali Jaamac Xirsi
8 - Aadan Cali Xirsi
9 - Saleebaan Jaamac Maxamed
10- Yaasiin Cilmi Cawil

The Prophet (SAW) was asked "What is the best Jihad" The Prophet (SAW) replied, "A word of truth spoken in front of an oppressive ruler." (Sunan Al-Nasa'i #4209)

No doubt, But somalis never learn form the past, now they are handing over sheikhs to the Ethiopians
And we can't even count the number of Sheikhs killed during the civil war until now, including inside mosques.
