Somali government spurns parliament term extension

One day after the African Union decided the term of Somalia's transitional federal parliament Somali government officials have vehemently spurned the decision, an official said Tuesday.

Mohammed Abdullahi Omar, Somalia’s foreign minister, during a press conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, said the AU is always committed to supporting the Somali government and its people, but said this step is against the transitional federal charter of Somalia nation.

Omar, an active member of the transitional government, stressed that his government will deliberate further on suitable steps against the decision to extend the parliament's term.

The terms of both the government led by Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and the parliament is set to expire in August.

The decision to extend the Somali parliaments's term came during a special meeting on Somalia on the sidelines of African Union summit in Addis Ababa.
