Everything that finds its way into the media isn't always true or doesn't mean it will happen. Sometimes its done for rating for more than anything else.

I also doubt they will ban halal meat.

Where do you guys live wallahi? Media sensationalism is one thing, reporting real live parliamentary is another.

The Dutch are trying to ban Halal meat but they don't want to seem like they are targeting Muslims, so they took a page out of France and is taking a page out of "secular" card...ban all ritual slaughter, Halal as well as Kosher.
Ban on Kosher and Halal ritual slaughter a step nearer

Friday 08 April 2011

A majority of MPs is now opposed to Jewish and Muslim ways of killing animals following the Labour party’s decision to support a ban.

Kukri you are losing the ball. The English haven't tried to ban Khat because criminalize has massive repercussions for their already disenfrenchised Horn and Arab population. But UK is just like the US, such debates about scarves and halal meat will never be accepted by mainstream topics.

France and the other minions like Holland, Switzerland, etc are different breed.

Their country their rules.
The basis for democracy is some issues things are undemocratic such as minority rights. The US bill of rights, the most important component of the constitution, and which is shared on a universal scale by Western democracies and institutions is the most undemocratic piece of legislation that could be produced. It says no matter who is in control of the country, no matter what political party is in office certain rights are unalienable and are not up for interpretation or tampering by the majority. The number one right enshrined is freedom of religion and how Muslims and Jews eat is about as religious as you can get. This isn't about Burqa and property rights which have loopholes to be exploited. So confused young man, it is not their rules. Even if they did pass it (given the majority of the Dutch parliament is now in the hands of the extreme conservative rightwing), the EU constitutional court which is superior to that of the individual parliaments will tear it down.
