Federalism for today & the Future

Postby Monk-of-Mogadishu » Mon Apr 25, 2011 4:52 am

Agreed?

I believe the way forward is federalism. At our present state of development and population, even the biggest clans can survive on the most meager lands of the smallest clans, this proves that every group in a future federal roadmap no matter their size would be self sufficient.

So, is it fair to sacrifice natural and peaceful traditional borders in exchange for centralized bureaucratic control of resources under the guise of nationalism and wealth distribution among the regions.

When the idea of federalism was announced some time back, Somali civil society at home and abroad engaged in the single largest state building endeavor in the whole history of the Somali people.

This is the way forward. The way I see it, if Puntlanders with limited available resources and distantly-spaced population centers could bloom, then the sky is the limit for future Hiiraan and Jubbaland and Banaadir federal states.

Federalism is another form of divisionism open to abuse. The promoters of federalism under the microscope have little credibility left as a result of past actions and current stance on the overall issue of resolving the somali problem. Federalism is not an organic solution nor is it one that will benefit all somalis. Somali politics is not mature enough to capitalise on the functions of federalism and instead of solving the problem would more then likely accelerate intra and inter-clan conflicts. Federalism cannot appease all parties nor will it bring somalis unity or a shared future under a single statehood.

Federalism is temperary project to disintegrate centralised power and distribute this power away from moqadishu. Decentralised leaderships decisions are not ideal for somalis with vast differences in levels of education, development, regional assets, access to transportation etc.

Federalism is also not ideal for somalis simply because every somali was born a president irrespective of education or experience with such a culture federalism will give the milkman, the grave digger, the fisherman and the diaspora vulture equal opportunity to effect decision making... nothing will ever get done and there will be a fist fight at every opportunity.

YES such a system could lift the burden of the shoulders of who ever sits in ~Moqadishu and given more responsibility to the federals, however a power 4th world failed state is not in a position to accomodate 12 decision makers with no experience or ability to maintain a a grand overall objective of delivering the basic needs of the population who are far better off with zero leadership and have done so for 20years.

Somalis lack th sophistication required to maintain a federal framework, we lack the federal states apparatus to make such a system function. There will be more leaders and even less delivered to the population as each of the dozen federals exerts pressure on the system to further their own self interests.

Sorry monk: federalism looks pretty on the surface but i don't think you have any idea of the consequences it presents to the vast majority of somalis it will impact.

Bro, this federalism project does not benefit everyone equally. We are 100% better of with Shabab or a Dictatorship.
