Walahi mental illness is a big problem in our community. How many brothers I know that have mental issues that remain untreated.
Theres one somali guy in my area. He strolls the local area, where there are shops, masjid, basic community stuff. I come across him twice, once he pulled a knife on me and another time I come out the masjid and he said to me 'oi wanker why u going mosque? when ur about to go home and watch porn', that was his exact words, i started laughing thinking he was joking . I knew the guy was ill, but was still in shock man. Some focked up shit man.

Subxanallah. Horrrible news. Just got news my friend got hit by a car. He was crawling on a busy street at 3:00 am and got hit by a car. Physically He's banged up but will be okay, but He's bruised up pretty bad. I'm going to visit him @ the hospital. Wallahi I can't believe it is like a movie. never thought in a million years stuff like this can happen to this guy.

^^ Waryaa maad waalatay?

Oo why don't you tell his family?

The situation is very bad. Ilahay caafimaad haa siiyo. Amiin.
Okay, we too have a nutcase on our hands, weliba a 'threatening' one. He has refused medicine and help, and has MAJOR paranoia, I looked it up and think it is paranoia psychosis. It is very sad, because it seems like it will go down the route of him being admitted to a mental institution. Wallahi wiilashaan dhiib aa haysto, they are smoking too many weed and skunk and expect their brains not to get damaged in the process.

Murax - I hope your friend gets better.
Only Soomaalida still keep mental illnesses shrouded in mystery & confusion, while the developed world has recognized them and found necesasary treatment. The brain like any organ in the body can get ill, where's the mystery in that? Brain is susceptible to all sorts of ailments, all it takes is prolonged lack of sleep, seratonin/dopamine dips and anyone can end up with mood disorders or a host of other mental ailments. It happens, some are lucky enough to get proper treatment in time, while others take much longer. He could be psychotic or schizo if he's having hallucinations or suicidal tendencies, that's for a psychiatrist to determine. Either case, hope he gets the treatment he needs and recovers, inshallah. It could've happened to anyone.

Half Baked,
This fellla was severely sleep deprived for several months. He worked two jobs 40 hrs each, including working night shift. Sometimes he would go 3-4 days without sleep. Could this have something to do with it?

Murax - its funny that you mention that because researchers have found that most mental illness patients have some sort of sleeping disorders. Sleep is very essential to normal brain activity, its during sleep that the brain finally gets a chance to re-organize memory, emotion, voluntary functions and routine maintenance. Without sleep, neorons don't get a chance to sprout as necessary, important decoding and sequential data sorting doesn't take place, etc. More importantly, lack of sleep highly affects an area in the brain called the amygdalea that's responsible for emotion. People who don't get enough sleep show abnormal neuron activities in this region of the brain compared to people who get regular sleep. Hormones like niropinephrine which causes panick attacks, hallucinations and causes people to have adrenaline type feelings are released.
Lack of sleep has been linked to everything from manic depression to PTSD, even psychotic disorders which are cognitive and not mood based like depression. The APA (American Psychological Assoc.) and the AMA (American Medical Assoc.) Have mandated that hospitals, specially emergency rooms screen people for mental disorders and one of the things they ask is the person's sleeping habits. Also, when patients are admitted to psych wards, the first thing they do is give them vitamin B6 complex which is a natural sleep inducer and other sleeping aids. Its not a matter of is there a correlation, its documented. Lack of sleep, lack of vitamin D, lack of exercise, lack of omega-3 and omega-6 foods, isolation and lack of communal socializing will cause depression because all these directly affect our dopamine and seratonin levels & functions.
