SOMALIA: Fire destroys IDP camp as Puntland’s capital lacks fire fighter

GAROWE (RBC) Heavy fire has again flared up in very populated IDP camp in Garowe, the capital of Somalia’s semi-autonomous state of Puntland on Monday.
At least 2 persons were wounded in the fire while nearly 200 make shift houses made up of old rags and sticks in the densely populated camp were destroyed by the fire.
The camp was home to more than thousand internal displaced families from southern regions of the country.
“We do not know what caused the fire but someone said it started from traditional stove inside one of the houses”. Halima Nur, displaced mother in the camp told RBC Radio.
There were no any fire fighters to put out the flaming fire that resulted many families loose the only belongings they had.
“This is the capital of Puntland which has no even one fire fighter”. Ali Abdirahman local elder scolded that Garowe mayor missed one of his main duties.
The local community begun assisting the families whose houses had been burnt down as many of the families with their children were seen laying in nearby alleys.
Meanwhile, on Monday another fire caught up in IDP center in Bosasso, the commercial town of Puntland.
