$32 billion dollars on a 62 story high rise building? when Kenyan's in NEP are dying of hunger, drought and luck of infrastructure. its much better if they spent that money on improving the poor infrastructure in Nairobi, such as building better wide streets with sidewalks and garbage collectiona and sewage system, to improve the appreance of the city.
if this is from private sector it will be alright, but since this is a government project, they wasting ppl's money.

Building the tallest buildings is not a sign of development!!!!!! I agree though that Kenya could be an economic hub in the region. in 1965 Kenya's GDP was almost 8 times that of Korea (south). Today it is only a fraction.

Kenya has two major problems it needs to tackle before embarking on real economic development:

- Corruption. By all accounts, Kenya is one of the most corrupted countries. A remedy here is to build strong institutions.
- Population growth .

The issue of subways is a good move, but they should focus on road safety first because that is killing thousands every year.

I doubt whether the writer has been to singapore and Hong-hong: the reason for having high rise buildings is not to show economic development but because of lack of space.

European countries and some asian countries don't have high rise buildings!

i have learnt that there is a tendancy for some somalis to brainwash and mislead those few gullible and naive somalis that only NEP is suffering and being discraminated against by nairobi, most kenyan somalis however are very happy with their country,so please this line wont sell , hunger is everywhere in kenya not just in Nep,and all kenyans are suffering equally due to hard economic times and the drought, the diffrerence is NEP is getting moore media coverage

Mzee Meru, if you want a discussion on the threads you introduce please make sure that you don't throw accusations. I have noticed that you throw that kind of bunchlines when you are cornered. :!:

What will planing the Africa's tallest building achieve???? economic prosperity is not about "tall buildings". Kenya needs to do more if it wants to develop.

Build strong institutions to fight graft and attract foreign direct investment; create a judicial infrastructure that ensures equal treament of its people, make sure it that controls its population growth and finally to ensure that human lives are worth living for.

Free advice from a man wishing Kenya and the rest of Africa economic develoment

you are comparing apples and oranges now.you might have few slums overlooking rio de janero,mumbai...etc cuz they are a huge mega cities.even LA have a huge homeless population.but according to experts, half of Nairobi's population live in 100 slums.now if you ask me,I would say thats the mother of all economic injustices, and I dont see how priority could be given to erecting a single building with that huge sum of money over taking care of the city's half residents who live in destitute

Meru, I work as a consultant for developing countries and believe you me you don't know the extent of corruption and its affect on the economic development of Kenya.

Kenya has all the prerequistes to develop; human capital, a relatively fertile country (although alot of it goes into cash crops) but these are overshadowed by massive corruption and institutional discrimation.

You need to attract capital

Back to your topic;
Only people in developing countries view tall buildings as a measure of development! We are captivated by shiny things; surface thinking.

This kind of mindset is a sick one.

The Kenyan police treat me better than you or any other Kenyan citizen. I land at Jomo Kenyatta, have a VIP reception and have escorts when travelling in Kenya. But, I am not blind to see how Kenyan citizens are treated. I have made numerous reports and have tried to influence your leaders. :)

Kenya is a corrupt country with nepotism and institutional discrimination of many of its communities; the Bantus view the Nilotes as enemies, the nilohamities view the bantus as enemies; the somalis are discriminated while a large population in the semi-arid countries don't feel part of it.

I guess your knowledge of economic development, political dynamics etc are very limited my friend; so don't bother posting threads if you cannot engage in a civilised discussion and mind you we are living in the 21st century so have the guts to acknowledge failures.

By the way access this page and get the literature on the issues we have discussed.
