Facts
About 80,000 Ethiopians who survive on trash at the Addis Ababa city dump in an area called Korah. Many of the people who scavenge through the trash are children and women.
What makes Addis different than cities in the U.S. with prostitution problems? The answer lies in the statistics. More than 150,000 women walk the streets each night. Many charge $1 per trick, making them accessible to both Ethiopians and those on business from the West.
Meles is now estimated to worth $1.2 billion, according to sources close to his regime. Making him the richest president in Sub sahara Africa. Though Ethiopia is the fourth poorest nation in the world.

Quality of life sucks. Pollution, extreme poverty, etc etc. Nice buildings though.

I have been to Ethiopia 3 times. 2006, 2007 and 2008. Addis city centre looks good, but the reality is that the population living standards are very grim. People in Puntland and Somaliland have better living standards, granted its a much smaller population.

There are TONS of prostitutes roaming the street every night. There are tens of millions who are one day away from starving to death. Because I was a light skinned dude who clearly looked like he just arrived from Europe, I was constantly hassled by beggars.

The Ethiopians are good warm people, but thy have severely been let down by an oppressive regime. These fancy buildings are nice and all, but what good is it when the majority of the population live off scraps and kids try and make a living by cleaning people's shoes for 1 bir [10 pence].

Also, Internet is non-existent. The web is either blocked or its completely slowed down. Hence the Ethios are completely cut off the rest of the world.
