Conjoined twins

Postby XaliimoFarax » Tue Sep 13, 2011 9:15 pm

A pair of conjoined female twins have defied doctors' predictions and are ready to celebrate their 50th birthdays this Sunday — becoming the oldest twins of their kind.

Pennsylvania pair George and Lori Schapelle insist they lead very separate lives despite being joined at the head.

George, who was originally named Dori, has decided to live as a man while Lori has enjoyed sexual relationships with men since she was 23 years old.

"When we were born, the doctors didn't think we'd make 30 but we proved them wrong," Lori told The Sun.

"We've learned so much in the last 50 years and will continue living life to the full."

But the twins do not enjoy the same health conditions — Lori is able-bodied while George has spina bifida and must use a wheelchair, which Lori pushes.

They were born sharing 30 percent of their frontal brain tissue and critical blood vessels, which means they cannot be separated.

The twins live alone in a two-bedroom flat and alternate the nights they sleep in each other's rooms.

Both are currently single.

"When I went on dates, George would bring along books to read and as we don't face each other, he could ignore any kissing," Lori said.

"I don't see why being a conjoined twin should stop me having a love life and feeling like a woman."

Lori was engaged five years ago but months before the wedding, her fiancé was killed by a drunk driver.

A year later, George came clean about his desire to live as a man and changed his name from Dori.

Both say they have supported each other through difficult times in their life.
