UN will target corrupt Somalis with new sanctions

Postby DatBreh » Tue Sep 20, 2011 11:10 am

By KATHARINE HOURELD, Associated Press – 31 minutes ago

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A U.N. official says that corrupt Somali politicians could face travel bans and have their foreign bank accounts and property frozen under tough new U.N. sanctions.

An analyst said such sanctions could help get food aid to famine victims.

Matt Bryden, who heads the U.N. arms monitoring group that provides an annual report to the U.N. Security Council, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that corruption is one of the main obstacles to peace in Somalia.

A team of eight investigators is due to begin work this week. It's the first time senior Somali politicians could face consequences for corruption in the 20 years since the country dissolved into civil war.

Hard to believe this has never happened before, no wonder Somalia is teeming with politicians, they've been getting away too easily.

Matt Bryden is a corrupt and needs to be watched himself! He should be thanking Somalis for having a job. He like many others are exactly the characters described in the book: Lords of Poverty. Furthermore, this guy supports the balkanization of Somalia.

Yes, there is a corruption in Somalia, but Matt Bryden and the likes of Mahiga should be the last to preach about it.

Nobody cares about him per se or his little lobbying for Somaliland in his writings with those think tanks. However in his capacity as a member of the arms embargo, he has a specific job that has nothing to do with lobbying or getting his opinion across. He just helps reports on those bringing weapons into the country. It is his only job description.
