HIV / AIDS in Somalia

Postby Alchemist » Sat Nov 12, 2011 12:09 am

Are not a rare thing anymore in Somalia specially in the major cities and border town. The good thing though is not rampant like other African countries. All major cities now have centers that give assistance to people with the disease.

I asked my brother who works for an ngo how do people react once they get the news. He said like everyone else around the world we give them medicine and that is it.

I guess it was a matter of time. Somalis need to stop thinking their some how different/special and start protected themselves and caano geel does not cure everything

If people could only test themselves before they jump in bed it would saved many lives.

How fucked up is it that the number one thing preventing Somalis from getting AIDS, turns around and is the number one reason why so many Somali women die each day, Unnecessarily? Lack of proper Bloodbanks, in case ur wondering. :?

Its not very high like most neighboring countries but is all over. The rapid test kits are available and good to use before engaging in sexual activities. In less than 10 min, you can find out your and her status.

Btw, its critical to get TB, HIV, Herpes, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, HPV, and HEPATITIS (which is rampant here).

Keep a box of condoms on hand at all time. The level of STIs is quite high.

Somalis are deficient in HIV/AIDS awareness we as a Muslim country don't like to talk about sex to the growing public, unless its marriage related sex discussion. But by not being informative to the younger generation as well as older generation, you can expect Hiv/Aids to run rampant.

I would suppose having countries with very high HIV prevalence rate as neighbours makes it worse, especially with porous borders and no health check-ups of migrants moving in and out.

Oh, in Childbirth. Somalia has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the WORLD (second only to Niger, I think). A lotta women and girls simply bleed out in maternaty wards (those that make it there), due to lack of proper blood banks to help them during the process . It's also got one of the highest children under 5 mortality rate, which means that very few of the children they leave behind die after just a few months, or years later from other TOTALLY preventative things like the measles. Sad, all around.

Horrific, shows how there really is no substitute for a functioning govt. That is the only thing that has the capacity to provide such necessities. Eritrea used to have one of the highest maternal moralities in the world too when they first got independence but years of stable govt turned it around. Now they have one of the lowest in the region and one of the highest life expectancy too.

Are there any statistics by region for Somalia?
