Plane Landing at Mogdishu Airport.

Postby King-of-Awdal » Fri Nov 18, 2011 2:49 pm

The interesting part for me as someone who is into aviation is the amount of aircraft sitting at the Tarmac in a War-Zone such as Mogadishu. Plus another thing i noticed was if and when Somalia gain's peace and reconstruction start's and there is a heavy boom of air travel this Airport will be slot restricted as you can see the only way it can expand is to the sea LOL.

KOA,

The airport runway can be extended on the side opposite to the ocean. The number of planes landing there has increased immensely. You have Turkish airlines landing there at least 2 to 3 times a week. Planes from Kuwait, Oman, Pakistan, UAE, Kenya, etc are all found on the tarmac there.

Airfares from Mogadishu are 40% cheaper than any other Somali city.

I have no clue but at the end the flight attendant seems to be Kenyan with a hint of British accent if am not mistaken.

AW

Yes but i actually looked at Satellite images of the Runway and it seem's there is only one at the moment and look at it closely the only other runway that can be built will be limited. Plus it seem's most planes landing at the airport make a U-Turn and land from the sea obviously for safety reason's. Airfares might be cheaper but the airport is in a prime location as it seem's to be not far from the city center or the Presidential palace again looking at the airport. As i said for this airport to expand one day to be able to handle alot of passengers either alot of people are going to be displaced or the city has to get another airport.

Yeah, if we get to that stage then it might be able to expand inland like AW said by compulsorily purchasing the buildings in the way. Perhaps a cheaper option might to develop N50 and divert planes there.

Who's idea was it to build the airport so close to thesee anyway? It is not sustainable. Probably some raaxo loving Italian who wanted a nice view everytime he landed.

The land there would better serve as as some resort or luxury accomodation/restaurants etc.

KOA,

I have a video of landing at MGQ on a Beechcraft. I need to censor out some parts before I can post it.

Aaah it's these time that i love Googleearth LOL. I just looked around and i dont see any other airport any where near the city so i dont know where this N50 is but i do notice a place somehow north of the city that seem's to have something that may look like a dirt runway, maybe AW can confirm this. :?

UlteriorMotive

There is a reason why the airport is where it is. Look at Villa Somalia and where the airport is, clearly it is on purpose for the airport to be where it is. You might actually be shocked to know that some of the Busiest airports in the world actually operate only on two runway's so it's no unthinkable.

AW

Please do that and since am graduating next year, if Airbus, Boeing or Bombardier dont hire me ill holla at you.

KOA,

The airstrip in the North is probably Dayniile airstrip where they carted off wadaadist suspects into CIA planes or could be the Cisaleey Air strip operated by Ali Mahdi.

The best runways in Somalia are Berbera and Mogadishu. The worst are Bosaaso (gravel) & Garowe. Hargeisa needs fixing up and so does Galkayo which was a military air base.

AW

Berberas Runway is freaking too damn Long. I dont see an airport for Garowe but Bossaso also seem's to be a Dirt or something runway. About Mogadishu i think it will be better to have another Airport somehow north of the city since it seem's to have more empty land specifically when you follow the shoreline. For some reason looking at Google earth the beaches heading south of the city seem to be not as pristine as the one's heading North that is until you are quit a distance from the city. As you get closer to Merca than it turn's to get nice.

I think its placed there on purpose near to the presidential palace. If i were to make sense of it i'll say its for security reasons. Its easy escape for the president and his family incase things get out of hand.

KOA,

Berbera was one of NASA's alternative landing sites for the Space Shuttle and the MSB government used to receive $2 million per year for the rights to land the shuttle there in an emergency. It also has some great infrastructure. Radar stations, jet bunkers, sea defense buildings.

ATLEAST WE BUILT OUR OWN AIRPORTS, UNLIKE BERBERA WHICH WAS BUILT BY THE RUSSIANS, OR XAMAR WHICH WAS RENOVATED BY THE RUSSIAN.
HATERS GONNA HATE!

How common is this practice across the world? Heathrow is pretty far from Central London.

Also, was security that much of an issue when it was built that the president had to be shuttled quickly to villa somalia?

KOw...do you wish to be a pilot?

Even though City Airport is closer to the Financial district Heathrow is by far the most Convenient placed airport in London. There is a reason why one landing slot in Heathrow is valued at 250 million+. If and when the day comes Mogadishu airport will also be slot restricted if they dont reclaim land and build the airport towards the sea.
