What Happened to the Yibir ?

Postby AbdiWahab252 » Sat Nov 26, 2011 2:30 pm

What happened to them ? I haven't seen them collecting their traditional fees. Another lost cultural relic of PreWahabi Somalia.

Abdiwahab

My best friend is Madhibaan let me call him, he definitely knows more about the Yibir than I do.

But my question is What happened to maxamuud Gorgaarte (Madhibaan) the brother of Hawiye. How two brothers with the same father one can become Midgaan and the other one Nasab?

They are still around mainly in the North, I know a few families in the West who've built houses in Hargeisa.

I always get confused between Yibir and Gabooye. Gabooye are the ones from Burco and Yibir are the ones from Hargeysa right?

They still do but your neck of the wood is too hot even for a yibir.

But make no mistake, a record has been kept for all the hawiye born and they'll be coming once the war is over.

Kukri,

Let them come. They will be paid. But do the Yibir still collect their fee in Waqooyi ?

Fighter,

Are the Yibir still active in Sland ? I have noticed that Sland has become so conservative wahabi that they can not collect anything.

Mahdi,

The concept of Midgan is relative. I strongly believe that the Midgan were the superior Somali tribes whose skills like metal making allowed them dominance over the lower Somalis who depended on the midgan for knives, swords and other metal objects. The Midgan used to demand a high price from the lower Somalis in order to exchange their metal works with them. Prices included being given women, lots of animals etc. The midgan became greatly despised by the lower Somalis who rose up against them and destroyed the aristocrats Midgaan. In order to ensure that they never became as dominant, they were labeled as pariahs and oppressed everywhere they lived. This theory was told to me by an elderly somali man.

Abdiwahab,
What is the fee you are talking about?

Looking at the responses on this thread, it seems that somalis have still a long road to travel before they realise and acknowledge historical injustices.

We should leave behind geeljire mentality and embrace the contributions of the so called Midgaans, madhibaans, gabooyes and the waraabeeya.

I would like to be them but I was denied. I asked for acceptance by trying to marry this beautiful lady but her parents said I was not a pure madhibaan; imagine that! the victim becomes the oppressor.

I like your description above; that they are superior to somalis.
