What happened to them ? I haven't seen them collecting their traditional fees. Another lost cultural relic of PreWahabi Somalia.
They are still around mainly in the North, I know a few families in the West who've built houses in Hargeisa.
I always get confused between Yibir and Gabooye. Gabooye are the ones from Burco and Yibir are the ones from Hargeysa right?
Gabooye is just a collective name for different minority clans including Tumaal, Yibir, Madhibaan etc. They identify as a collective in Somaliland regions.

Abdiwahab,

All most all somalis are midgaans because historically;

Anyone who deviated from the prevailing norm /convention were classified as migaans; shoe making, circumcision, eating meat older than one day; begging, smoking, chewing qaad etc were classified as midgaans

It is a social construction.

I strongly believe that they are the most beautiful people on earth; because of discrimination they did not intermarry with other somalis.
.
In my town, they are in the majority and one thing I realised is that they discriminate too; stockholm syndrome.

In the NFD there are usually Waraabeeye, Geel bariis and Reer Baxar; beautiful people. I once called a waraabeeye guy adeer and I was given a beating by one of my uncles.

I have tried to break taboos and date one of their beautiful girls; I never told my relatives . She told her relatives and they called the engagement off.

Im Tumaal, and I 've heard elders from my clan have variations of the story that Abdiwahab posted but I don't buy it either. Its a social construction and similarities exist everywhere. Our skills/profession was outside the social norm, esp in a society that associated wealth/standing through pastoralism. That's all there is to it. But the professions that we have historically practiced have always been necessary, hence why the social stratification existed in the first place. As far as ancestry goes without a doubt we are ethnic Somalis, as are other related minority clans.

As for the reference to "stockholm syndrome" just as the rest are socially conditioned to discriminate against minorities in marriage, they've learnt not to put their relatives/offspring at risk because of the complications that would come with such marriages. Its different in the West at times, but yes, minorites would rather marry other minorities generally.

I agree with saraxnow . Nobody can actually tell you what they look like , because they look like me and everybody else .
The only thing that I know is the discrimination they have been dealt throughout history . I don't know where it comes from , but it is the weirdest form of discrimination because the average camel shagging somali cannot pick them out in a crowd and they live among him  markaasey somalidu ku alifta shekooyinki ciyaalka laga ga cabsiin jiray
Ilaahow ceebtena astur . Hindida aan Allah aaminsanayn baa sida isu la dhaqanta , waa xaaran

Jaidi,
Don't reply to bigots!

Are the Warabeeyas (I think a branch of the Tumaal) and reer baxar related? I am asking this because in the NFD these two "clans" are viewed as Midgaans.

Execuse me for my ignorance.

Regarding the Stockholm syndrome; it is not unusual for victims to become like those who victimised them. As I mentioned earlier, the majority of somalis living in my town are " Muuse Dheri" and it seems that when it comes to tribalism there is no difference between them and savage somalis.

Greetings Brother Jaidi,

What is the meaning of the word Tumal?
Could it be that Tumal is only linked to the socio professional occupations not necessarly a clan/tribe as we understand it today...
...just like the Tumtuus in oromo, those who work the metal ie making weapons: the word Tumtuu comes from Tumu meaning beating like
when they beat the red hor iron?

B.

Yes that is it exactly. Tumaal= blacksmith, metalworker. Tumtuu sounds similar and has the same meaning so I'm guessing its the exact Oromo equivalent. However the profession was socially stratified hence creating it into a clan family.
