Entering a New Age of Computing

Postby Alphanumeric » Mon Dec 12, 2011 10:16 am

The last 6 or 7 years has shown us that even with the extreme growth of personal computing and electronic storage, the relative computational capabilities have processors have been stagnant. In recent years, engineers have been pushing the boundaries of computing, and I think they've finally hit a threshold.

World’s first programmable quantum photonic chip

Although there have been discussion of molecular computing occurring before quantum computing, I think this is worth celebrating. I've been reading about this stuff for a few years, and whenever I tried to talk about it, I'd sound totally insane. So, if you like, look into quantum computers.

Japanese Giant Builds Computer Memory With Light
Another driving force is the future of Internet servers and supercomputers: many-core chips. These chips require fast communications between processor cores, leading to a network-on-a-chip architecture. “Optical RAM will be implemented inside ultrafast many-core CPU chips with a photonic network design,” says NTT’s Notomi. “This strategy will [ultimately] need to introduce optical routing in a chip, and then optical RAM will be called for.”

Neither their wealth nor their machines will avail them from the wrath of Allah [SAW]. Ya Allah speed up the day when the righteous will be raised up and the evil doers debased, when good will triumph over evil and your word will reign supreme over all the land. Ameen.
