I challenge all armchair militants and pseudo clan chiefs who never set foot in Somalia to go to Mogadishu and see what life is like for these folks who are taking bullets while Somalis are benefiting from their gains in Mogadishu. I met, conversed and ate with members of the Ugandan army/civilians under the AMISOM control and realized that they are are totally different from how the local media portrays them.
Myth #1: Gaalo (non believers) A good percentage, including many high ranking officials are Muslims. They even have hijabi sisters (I met them in person).
#2: Killing machine: They are professional soldiers and 1000s of times more careful than their Somali counterparts. They always get hurt trying to determine someone's intentions without shooting first.
#3: Hate Somalis: These guys do not hate us, just as frustrated as anyone else. Language barrier is the most single contributing factor of mistrust and suspicion.
#4: They don't want to defeat shababs: Well, this is complicated and hard to understand for the average person. Every action they take depends on very complex and hierarchal decisions made by different players from Kampala to donor nations. They are just soldiers doing what they are asked to do.
End result: Because of their sacrifices, Mogadishu is now controlled by the TFG.
My conclusion: If you hate AMISOM then direct your anger and frustration to the right people: Villa Somalia, Somali parliament, Kampala, UN, donor nations, etc, not to the soldier whose own life is at stake.
