Know the source and reason. This is most important. Without knowing the why, moving forward is impossible. If it can be immediately altered, do so. Understand the physiology behind it; it is a chemical imbalance. Vitamin supplements (B12/complex, folic acid, D and daily OJ are good starts) may help reduce the effects, along with proper diet and exercise. Cry if you need to. Talk to someone, if you can. Vent, somehow. Discussion forums exist for this reason. You cannot force someone out of depression. Simply "cheering up" is not how it works. I think depression is a symptom of a subconscious self-examination. You don't "deal with depression", you work through it.
1. Understand reasoning & physiology.
2. Immediately alter the source.
3. Improve diet & exercise.
4. Discuss it with others. Be open about it.
5. Change your wardrobe. Improve your image.
6. Create new goals and work toward them daily.
7. Continue to read and understand depression through varying avenues.
8. Laugh, to the best of your ability.
depressioncomix, akimbocomics, hyperboleandahalf all have excellent projections of what it means to actually feel depression. They also touch on fatalism and apathy, which go hand-in-hand with depression.
Some people say pray. I think it has varying effects.
