Somali dhaqan is dying in the west just as it should be. Somalis from my experience have a rich but weak culture if that makes sense. Everyday I see somalI kids with their mothers speaking in English together. Also they say their own name in a weird Americanized accent. Back home theres no need to worry about arabinization. However the threat back home is the younger generation of Somalis loving and adopting western culture.

I've been hearing "Somali dhaqan is dying" since I was a little boy in Marka, over 20+ years ago.
We're an ancient, stubborn, highly ethnocentric and communal based society, no chances of anything changing, not anytime soon at least.

Somalis in the diaspora
1. more often tend to marry outside of their race/ethnicity.
2. tend to lack the language skills needed to convey the culture.
3. have many poor/broken families therefor lose alot of the positive aspects of our culture.
4. Western culture is taking over as the dominant culture for Somalis in the diaspora.
Somalis in the country
1. influenced by neighbouring cultures mostly Arab and Kenyan, to a lesser degree Ethiopian.
2. live more in cities where culture is lost and due to lack of proper education the culture is not reinforced.
3. pro-longed conflict, in times of conflict Somali culture enabled resolution but pro-longed & reoccuring conflict effectively eroded culture.

well in the future propper Somali language and culture will not be considered mainstream, thats a fact. wealthy conservatives families will retain our culture but refuse to mingle with the others creating a class society, the vast majority of Somalis will experience culture implosion where the prononciation and use of words in their proper context will be alient, the minority who protected the culture will be seen as elite. they will be hated forced to live outside the masses or in high security gated communities. propper spoken/written Somali will be tought only in expensive private schools in Somalia and some of the high Somali populated areas around the world.

Nah, it's still alive and kicking. When there's a funeral, when someone gets sick, when there's a wedding, when a baby is born, Somali dhaqan is there with us, holding our hands, giving us hope and making us proud to be Somalis.
Somali dhaqan will never leave us. Viva Somali dhaqan.
