I would appreciate if anyone could adequately define "Somali culture/dhaqan" for me.

The language, they way you treat gussets or interact with others, types of events you celebrate e.g. how you do weddings, the music, food, clothes, proverbs.

Somali wedding dance (niiko) is something from bantu culture
food: sambuus/xalwa are from arabs/indians
food: Pasta and rice are Italian/Indian
clothing: macawis/dirac and garbasaar/cimamad all from arab/indian culture, and I could continue..Conclusion there is no pure Somali culture.

I feel you've misunderstood my posts. No where have I advocated against the Somali culture, aside from my first post in this thread. It was sarcastic. My posts were only intended to share my experiences with regards dropping a culture and language I've never been given, and defending myself from blame.

You're definition of Somali culture is ambiguous. I side with abdisamad. Somali culture is purely nomadic. Nomads are the most adaptive people in the world. They can't possibly have a culture that can be carried overseas. And whatever bit of it that can be carried over, conflicts with what we're taught in the deen.

Even though I've lived in Canada nearly all my life, I can barely call myself Canadian. My Islam is weak enough as it is, simply trying to exist here. Don't place the loss of Somali language and culture on my back. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not taking that.

Had I had an answer, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

As stated earlier, camels and poetry. Throw in proverbs, and you're good.

But without having been taught the language, what good is any of it?

Culture is the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; also : the characteristic features of everyday existence.

So if you grew up in Canada and have little experience of the Somali culture, surely you cannot be blamed for not behaving or acting in a way that's alien to you.

I am with you 100% on this!!
