The prohet (saw) never hit his wives and there are hadiths which show that ayah should not be taken as what many consider to be a beating these days but to use a miswak to lightly hit her (as suggested by early Islamic scholars). Women are allowed to get a divorce if they are beaten by their husbands so it can't be okay. The hadith's and the prophet's sunnah show us how to implement the Quran.

Sa’ad (Radihiallaho Anho) reported: Once I went to Ayesha (Radihiallaho Anha) and her father and asked them about the character and conduct of the Holy Prophet (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) to which Ayesha (Radihiallaho Anho) replied: Don't you read the Quran? I said: Yes. She said: The character of the Messenger of Allah is the Quran.


Narrated Mu'awiyah al-Qushayri: I went to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) and asked him: What do you say (command) about our wives? He replied: Give them food what you have for yourself, and clothe them by which you clothe yourself, and do not beat them, and do not revile them. (Book #11, Hadith #2139)

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying: He who believes in Allah and the Hereafter, if he witnesses any matter he should talk in good terms about it or keep quiet. Act kindly towards woman, for woman is created from a rib, and the most crooked part of the rib is its top. If you attempt to straighten it, you will break it, and if you leave it, its crookedness will remain there. So act kindly towards women. (Book #008, Hadith #3468)

Allaah swt gave us a brain to use and question. My point is to the effect that MEN SHOULD NOT take pride in that quotation of ayaah. And that i pinpointed to the nature of MAN and the contradiction of this particular-- 'refrain from the bed' clause. So u say--it is not about sex but abandonment? And that women are emotional creatures thus the silent treatment is a good effect to put them in check? Well, thats a fair arguement, but i reserve the right to reject it. That does not mean-- i am anti Islam or anti Ayaah-- it just means that i am God created creature who dare uses her brain. Your abandonment point is plausible and well taken, but will u then accept that men will welcome great pride in this particular ayaah? That women are compared to children and deserve constant control and checking'??? Therefore, is this right? Because--what the ayaah does --is basically generalize. That the female sex are emotional creatures and are like child, and are to be punished with abandonment tactics. ANd that Men are the best and the adult, and to be always right? Such generalization--i find is not very Islamic. It does not adhere to judge a character by its content and Not by its stereotypical attributes.
