A Utah woman who conspired to sell her then 13-year-old daughter’s virginity for $10,000 has been sentenced to prison.
The woman, who is unnamed to protect her daughter’s identity, is set to serve anywhere from one to fifteen years in jail.
Last year, she pleaded guilty to the second-degree felony of sexual exploitation of a minor, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.
Her lawyer said in court that the woman was ‘taking (prescription pills) like candy’ when she tried to pawn her daughter’s virginity to a man known only as ‘Don.’
The paper reports two first-degree felony counts of aggravated sex abuse were thrown out in exchange for her guilty plea.
In court, the mother’s lawyer blamed her behaviour in part on her addiction, but also on a rocky childhood. ‘It was not a pretty picture,’ her lawyer told the court.
‘The dysfunction and chaos of this family is evident.’
The daughter told the court in a letter: ‘Even though she has put me through a lot of stuff, I still love her.’
According to the Tribune, the mother broke down to tears and apologised for what she had done, saying: ‘I’m sorry I hurt her. She’s safe and that’s all that matters.’
The woman's alleged proposal was discovered by her boyfriend, who found a series of text messages discussing the deal on her phone.
The man in question has been identified only as 'Don'.
Salt Lake County prosecutor Sim Gill said the woman had promised 'Don' that her daughter would perform sex acts in exchange for $10,000.
The girl told police she initially consented to the arrangement but later decided she didn’t want to follow through, Mr Gill added.
The mother also admitted to taking the girl to a Victoria’s Secret store, where she opened the dressing room door for Don to watch the girl model bras and thong underwear.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported that she is further accused of sending pictures of the girl wearing lingerie to another man in exchange for cash.
The negotiations for the pictures and the sex acts are alleged to have occurred between April 1 and May 18 of last year.
