Somali youth in Prison !

Postby fisabililah » Wed Feb 22, 2012 1:45 pm

Assalamu aleykum,

I was just reading this, I never knew it was this bad:
A THIRD of criminals entering Britain's top youth jail last year were foreign, it was revealed yesterday.

More than 2,000 crooks aged ten to 18 passed through Feltham Young Offenders Institute in West London.

A total of 632 were not born in the UK. Somalia was the birthplace of one in ten of the foreigners — the highest of any nationality.

If a Somali young person comes out of prison, there is no one helping him. There is no community organized to help with his learning or gaining qualifications, skills or jobs. In the prison, you gain qualifications. Once they come out, Somali young people have no way of utilizing those qualifications they gained from prison. They have no social clubs to join. After a few days being out of prison, he forgets all about it and then gets back to the same old problems.

the parents of those youths failed them. no amount of organization can help troubled youth, more than family.

Somalis (except Somalilanders) have no social clubs or cultural events where young people can meet and learn more about their culture. All of my friends, including my Afghan ones who come from a failed state or one with sectarian violence do. Why can't we?

^HUH.. What makes Slanders different?.. :?

the parents of those youths failed them. no amount of organization can help troubled youth, more than family.
You shouldn't be quick to blame the parents.. I've noticed that a high proportion of Somali youths who go off the rails are the ones who have been brought to the west by other relatives such as aunts/uncles.. :|

Anywho, the figures are pretty shocking.. Never knew it was that high.. smh!
I think the issue with Somalis is once a youngester enters prison they are seen as being 'finished' gone in Somali eyes.. There's nothing worse then ending up in Prison in our community.. Therefore they dont see any point in 'helping' them out when they do get out...

In Toronto, they have exclusive Somalilander only events. Where they rent out hotel conference rooms/event spaces to celebrate their tribe/history/secession. This one kid I know from Somaliland is really active in the community and always post it on facebook.

Its ok. Somali youths are NOT special than the countless of adoon youth who have perished in the west. Good riddance.

PS ALL My distant relatives have moved to Egypt when their children reached early teenage years like (13 amd 14). They return after the age of 20, more adult, and more religious. My husband sh. Hyper is absolutely correct, it is the fault of the parents.

This is one weird issue. Out of all my friends, acquaintances and people I know of that went to prison, I can say most of the time its was doing some dumb sh!t in the wrong place, I can honestly say none of them were criminals or generally malice people, mainly a moment of madness, at the wrong time.

Personally I reckon its all about keeping the youth busy. If facilities for football, youth clubs etc exist then they are less likely to commit crimes. Keeping them busy and channeling their youthful energy in a positive way is the key, the saying idle minds is the devils playground comes into mind.

Also I think the UK places too much emphasis on academics = success. Some teenagers mature late in education, whilst other are simply not academic enough. They need to be shown that failing academic exams doesnt make someone a failure and hence resort to crime. Rather other vocational or enterprise routes need to be highlighted.

Its stupid to suggest that the reason why they are in jail is because of being poor and have no opportunities. All the immigrants in America generations ago came with only the clothes they were wearing. The kids were living in poor households but they were not going around committing crimes to the extent of Somalis or Jamaicans.

Its the fault of the parents.

Ever noticed why the East Asian immigrants are not criminals like Somalis? At a very young age they were taken to the library everyday by their parents.

Their parents make sure their kids are preoccupied and not in the streets. And the same time, these Asians come for poor households. It is their kids that lifted them out of poverty after one generation.

Blame should be towards the parents of the criminals. Not poverty. They don't do their job raising them and we should stop lying to ourselves

Truth.

Sealion, in Toronto, there are Somali and/or Muslim sports clubs that have made a large impact. I've grown up with plenty Afghans who thought they were in a gang. Culture plays little role. It is all in the home.
