Canada Tops Average Internet Usage?

Postby Alphanumeric » Fri Mar 02, 2012 9:53 pm

Canadians are spending more time online than users in 10 other countries, a new report has found.

The report, 2012 Canada Digital Future in Focus, by the internet marketing research company comScore, found Canadians spent an average of 45.3 hours on the internet in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from 43.5 hours during the same quarter a year earlier.

That’s more than internet users spent online in the fourth quarter of 2011 in the United States (38.6 hours), the U.K. (35.4) and South Korea (30 hours).

Some countries saw significant decreases in internet usage in the two time frames. In the fourth quarter of 2011, Italians’ internet usage dropped to 18 hours from 27.7 hours in the same period a year earlier. In India, usage dropped to 12.6 hours from 21.8 hours.

France added more than 15 hours to their internet time, at 27.5 hours during the last quarter of 2011, up from 11.9 hours a year earlier. U.K. internet users added nearly 10 hours to their online time, jumping to 35.4 hours from 25.8 hours a year earlier.

Canucks spend more time online than anyone else on Earth, according to new data from Web research firm comScore. And it’s not even by a small margin – the average Canadian spends 43.5 hours a month on the Web, almost twice the worldwide average of 23.1 hours.

 I'm sorry. :(

On a serious note, this is important information regarding major changes occurring in Canada's Internet management. We're getting the short end of the stick when it comes to rates and speeds. It's an insanely poor relation between the quality of the service and the rate of cost. It's only recently that things have begun to change. However, I'm questioning the validity of this research. It could very well be used to legitimize claims by the major telecoms that Internet management is in actuality representative of our usage.

We'll see what comes of this.

Yeah, they'll probably have a field day with this. The recent small gains will come crumbling down. Couple this with Bill C30, and the future doesn't look good.

What? Really? That makes no sense... don't you pay per gigabite internet usage in Canada? We pay per speed, but we've got unlimited gb here in the states.

Maybe its a relative number, like per usage per number of people in the country.

 smart ass, omg is that what an average means?

Say there are ten canadians and ten americans. Four of these americans have no access to internet, but only two canadians don't have internet access. If each canadian w. access logs 5 hours a week, but each american w. access logs 6 hours a week then even though americans use more hours each, the total hours would come out to 40 hours a week in canada for an average of 4 hours each and the american total would be 36 with an average 3.6. I said maybe its just relative per usage per number of people, because i was implying other factors such as access to internet werent even included.

^If we're talking sheer numbers, percentage of access and total data, Canada ranks down near the bottom of the list. Not even in the top 20. Canada's 9th when it comes to number of broadband connections. Canada is 22nd when it comes to percent of population using internet. US is 16th.

What you described is still the average usage. And we rank highest, apparently.

I read some of the dates on the site I was using. Seems many of them are from 2007
