THe root of the problem has always been the northern sudanese so called "arabs" wanting to forcefully spread their ideologies to the various ethnic groups in Sudan. This whole situation could have been prevented many many many times but Omar al Bashir made it even worse in the early 90's by aligning himself with the extremist al Turabi who had an agenda of turning the whole Horn of Africa region islamic and "arabization" of its population. Even though I personally do not believe Southern Sudan will be better off independent I can not blame them for their decision to choose independence based on the racist policies of the North. As gurey25 said Bashir still has a chance to save the situation by preventing the same mistakes with Darfur...but for those of you who do not know the Sudanese they are NOT hard workers or politically conscious. They like to sit on their arses all day long and eat. Their leadership doesn't follow any straight and clear policy...they change their minds more often than the sun rises and fail to have a clear cut long term strategy for their nation and its interests.

Bashir is an idiot, and sudanese foreign and domestic policy is a failure. But all this talk of "mujahid garang" is just pathetic.
