Somali writing came into existance in 1970's and plus it ain't really somali it uses latin-european letters, if Somalis want a writing language write in the gadabursi script or some shit.

However this is Hiiran and i ain't from there so meh.
No your wrong, it existed in the 50s but was first accepted as the official Somali script in 1972(if I remember correctly). Yes it uses latin letters, but so does most of the civilized world, it is extremely convenient for developing countries, and look us now we have more than 30% of Somali population abroad where they can freely type their mother tongue with ease thanks to the Somali script which adopted the latin symbols.

The only real reason why you are against the Somali script is because your envious of the man who created being a Marehan. it is SAD ! that a 17 year old kid has this much tribal hatred.

Well done to Hiiraan, our culture and languages comes before the arabic culture and language, anyway it is not like the modern Standard Arabic writing is old Quranic arabic, they are completely different. Abuukar is just a Jaahil Arab wannabe.

Etc etc etc. I am not even talking about private establishment where people could put what sign they want that is legitimate but these are institutions of higher learning and institutions in the country like chief port of entry that respect Arabic being as an official language of the country.

What is this edict about? If they said we allow only Somali-language writing it could be understanding under the guise they are "protecting" Somali language but to single out Arabic really seems to be transplanting another form of cultural imperialism and authoritarianism with the one practiced by Al Shabaab and that is how you know very well these people who wish to lead Somalia to stability are not politically mature or what Somalis call "bisayl".

There are just parasites of the desert given guns by Ethiopia.

isn`t this an educational issue.
leave the poor merchants out of this.

force and domination is all somalis know when dealing with each other, and humiliation and subjugation when dealing with foreigners.
sometimes i think somalis would be better off under a colonial system, managed by rational outsiders. :(

Force, force, force. Wallahi they and a lot of these ignorant kids who spoke in this topic remind me everything I hate about Africa. Force, force, force. No rationality, no respect for difference, no room for creativity, no room for tolerance, no room for CONSENSUS.

One day this one group comes and they say MY way, MY culture, MY values, MY system, MY world view. The people can't take anymore and then another group takes advantage and removes the one before. Immediately like they are suffering amnesia, what came before is thrown in the dustbins of history without anything to learn from and it becomes MY way, MY culture, MY values, MY system, MY world view. Cycle X2

Whether you agree with this or not, this petty action of intolerance is exactly a response to the intolerance prior. How do you cancel intolerance with intolerance? Even if you would like to see Somali-only signs...who gives you the right to dictate to other private enterprise that might exercise creativity and whatever business niche to include Arabic script if they so want?

The level of pettiness, short-term amnesia, inability to have foresight, totally lack of awareness and respect for difference, consensus, tolerance, inclusivity, and making every Somali individual free to express themselves legitimately in their own land astounds me wallahi. These idiots would be the first people screaming racism and discrimination if such a thing took place in the places their families have sought refuge and asylum in around the world. But oh no, the Somali in Somalia is not allowed the freedom of free expression.

At the end of the day it is about freedom. There is no justice without freedom and there is no freedom without justice. I am totally opposed to forcing the already suffering Somali people anymore than they have been forced. Let them breathe in peace and dignity.

Today Arabic writing...what tomorrow? No beards? No khameez on certain days? Isn't this what gave rise to the ICU against the "Ashahada-La-diri"? Isn't Al Shabab's intolernace now giving power back to another opposite force? Where would they intolerance lead back to except passing their limit to the point they tilt the populace back?

Short-term amnesia and everything despicable about an unenlightened society is our real curse, nothing else. This just reeks of a strategy derived from that, just another point in the cycle. Yet there will never be a shortage of those that will clap like headless chickens.

Here is what it really comes down to
1.We have a great percentage of the population that are illeterate (hence the need to use pictures infront of stores to show what goods they sell)
2. Majority of Somalis don't even speak arabic let alone read it
3. Is this about "protecting somali culture"

My issue comes down to forcing things one way or another. I fully support the use of Somali, I also don't have a problem with the use of Arabic. What I notice is that Arabic was forced upon the population by Shambles, and now a new administration is forcing Somali upon the population. The common denominator is force. My opinion is that businesses will do what ever brings them more business, if Arabic will bring more customers than they will do it, if Somali will bring more customers they will do it, and if using both will be the best method they will do it. So let businesses solve this issue.

The bluenWhite, Greenday, Blackvelvet, Somalifanatic your guys's argument is to protect the Somali language and culture. If that is the case, tell me why you see arabic as a threat to the language and culture? Also, do you support the banning of English as well since all the towns in Somali use english as well?
The Arabic language is threat to the native one. Take the schools in Somalia for example, the Somali language is now taught as a subject in the secondary schools only whilst Arabic is taught as both medium and a subject. Thus, Isn't it safe to say that the Somali language is playing second fiddle to the Arabic language!

Like I said before, our language needs to be protected from becoming an endangered language (it's almost there).

Tell your brother to get off my nuts.

Bush sold fear to the dumb asses and the hicks chirped after him. The unevolved primates now sell fear and expect Somalis to chirp after them.

Djibout does not have Somali as its national tongue, nor Ethiopia nor Kenya and I have yet to see Somali being endangered in any of those territories let alone the Somalia where it is coded as the working language of government. Keep it pushing primates, there is nothing special about your conduct and strategy. In fact it just looks too familiar.

Thebluenwhite

Somali has not had a government for 21 years, and there has not been a set coherent national curriculum in the country for that time. Each institution has become a private enterprise completely independent of Government support. Somali has a medium of learning has been dead for 21 years, because of a lack of textbooks in Somali that serve the need of this schools. This has led to each institution following a foreign curriculum. In the Galmudug pictures you showed, there schools are taught in english, with them even bringing over Indian and other foreign teachers. I wholeheartedly agree that there should be books in Somali that cover this need but at the moment there are not.

At the same time I do not believe that this endangers the somali language in anyway. Will you find any student that has graduated from the Somali universities, that have a full curriculum in a foreign language, that have deficiencies of the Somali language than their neighbor that has not gone to school? What percentage of native Somalis speak Somali in Somalia? I will argue that it is 100%.

Now, do I believe that Somali is playing second fiddle to these languages, english or arabic. In the realm of Education, Somali is second fiddle to them, and will be for a long time. Now this harm Somali in anyway. English is the language that is used worldwide to share ideas and technology, and scientificmedical achievements. English being taught in Universities and schools early on is giving the students access to those ideas, technologies, and scientific achievements. I wholeheartedly believe that foreign languages such as english should used to teach Somalis.

I believe that your argument is quite linear, which heavily relies on a negative correlation. If English/Arabic is used, then Somali proportionality diminishes. I also don't find much merit to the argument that Somali is an endangered language, when such mediums as t.v., newssites, that are geared to Somalis are in Somali while abroad or local. As in contrast to countries in western Africa where French/English is the national language for everything, yet even in those countries most people speak more than one language.

But this specific incident to me comes down to whether it is necessary or not. Whether they are just reacting to Alshabab: to show they are in power, and to say to the people and Alshabab we are here to stay so get used to it.

You are not in charge. The Ethiopians are and they could leave any second. How are you going to prevent Al Shabaab from taking over Beled-Weyne again if you are annoying the people with retarded authoritatian laws trying to control what they use on signs in front of their private business establishment. Every single Somali store I know here in my city in the US has "halal" written in Arabic but in Beled-Weyne they won't have that right. Cockroach brains wallahi.
Dickface, you say others are dumb but your arguments are so stupid. Why on earth would a shop in Baladweyne need to have a "halal" sign?

Quite a silly decision. From a social point of view this is stopping the people from doing whatever they want with their privately owned businesses. From a business point of view future Arab merchants who want to set up a business in the region could be turned off as they could think that the area is hostile to them.

This thread explains why Somalia is in its current situation, the vast majority of those who agree with this decision only do so for tribal reasons and the same could be said for some of those who are against it. If this is what our generation has to offer then let us enjoy another 20 years of anarchy.

The Republic, you take things way out of proportion dude. Somali language and writing system for Somali society, simple as that. If you dont like it...take it up with amnesty international and see how many Somali give a shit. I cant believe you are complaining about a law which enforces the Somali writing system goes mainstream and takes precedence over any other writing system in the country to protect our culture. Like blueNwhite said, the Somali language is playing second fiddle to the Arabic language at schools back home and this is just stupid. The Hiiraan admin seems to be taking steps to initiate a small but good step in instilling the Somali writing system in mainstream society by enforcing its use in the commercial arena. You should be happy, if it troubles you at least try to see the good in it. You seem to be all out shocked  and angry though. At the end of the day, my advice to you would be to make sure you're well read in Af Somali if you ever go to Hiiraan cause sweet cheeks thats all you gonna see everywhere

How about this... Somali, English and Arabic (importance in that order).

Somali writing is written bigger than the English and Arabic writing. So like this:

SOMALI

ENGLISH

ARABIC

That is probably sensible solution but I don't get why Arabic has to be in the last at all. Hardly anything useful is published in Arabic today. There are literally 40 or 50 more useful and deserving languages to feature above Arabic on that list. Other than being the language of the Quran, what is Arabic's claim to greatness?
