Somali Nicknames

Postby waryaa » Tue Jul 10, 2012 10:55 am

I noticed a good portion of Somali men have nicknames that are more popular than their real names. I am going to use this thread as my diary on all the strange nicknames I either come across or hear on the radio on daily basis. I'll keep updating it insha Allah. Your contribution is highly appreciated.

Take one:

fartaag
biibaaye
shaaheye
indho/indhos

women
laba kastumo

politicians:

In 1950s There was a one particular English teacher in Sheikh boarding school. With the time he has noticed unethical behaviour (Somali nicknames) except his own nickname"Af-qashuushle" unstraight teeth.
One day the teacher asked students to behave in an ethical manner. Calling names because of their disability is purely harassment. i.e. LAANGADHE, ALI CURYAAN, CAWAR etc. One student raised his hand and said what about yours "AF-QASHUUSHLE" !! guess the meaning. The teacher replies I have no clue. Markii loo macneeyey the teacher exploded with anger and left the country for good.
