10 Things Most Americans Don't Know About America

My favorite:

The problem with the US is that everyone thinks they are of talent and advantage. As John Steinbeck famously said, the problem with poor Americans is that “they don’t believe they’re poor, but rather temporarily embarrassed millionaires.”

No it is true. It is the force behind American ingenuity and innovation. I have seen it in action.

im not doubting that,
but it must be shocking for an average american to discover that his quality of life is very low compared to other developed countries.

Per capita because America's population is huge compared to the rest of the developed world. Also because the USA puts an emphasis on work and less on entitlements.

Personally I am a moderate democrat on the economy which means I am a conservative in European terms. I believe in safety net for the absolute poor and disenfrenchised and a culture that encourages work and reward for the majority.

My litmus test for quality of life is not if I can retire earlier or I can have 2 month break from work as opposed to 2 weeks but if I have the support, the encouragement, the opportunities, and the chance to be as great as I can be. No one beats the US especially the Europeans who have stagnated in innovation because of this.

Look at this could Obama have been made in any other country on earth? No really, not developed nor developing. This is what the American dream means. If you work hard enough, you have every chance to be successful.

mate im only talking about quality of life.
this is my criteria.

1. affordable and high quality health care, it doesn't even have to be free, there are many countries where you can get insurance for less than $100 a month that provides high quality health care.

2. affordable and high quality accommodation, not being saddled with high real estate debt, being able to rent cheap good appartments.

3. good public transport.

4. at least 4 weeks vacation time every year. even work obsessed Japanese that work more hours than Americans on average get more than 2 weeks off.

and last .. not being scared shitless by your television everyday.

from what little time i spent in the US, 4 weeks.
i was scared shitless, it seems like every 5 minutes some murder or police chase or something criminal was happening
I enjoyed Newyork though, but i would not want to work here.

You can get a better quality of life in Singapore, Hongkong and many many more cities .

even dubai which i consider shit, i get 5 weeks of vacation a month, good helathcare, and the housing market is back to normal and i live in a spacious 3 berdroom apartment for $1000 month.

Gurey,

I was in Xamar during the dark days of 2010 and was smoking some cigarettes with a shady white contractor at MGQ. We were shooting the shid when i asked him what brought him to the hell hole known as Somalia. He said cash, cash. We kept talking and he says that he is a few years away from retirement and wanted to retire in New Zealand of all places and not the shidhole America. I laughed and asked why to which he replied better standard of living and excellent health care. I couldn't agree more with the fellow and also am planning to figure a way of going to a similar place.

Gurey,

Okay, the only people I know there live in the remote desert city called Perth. But I would succumb to Island Fever being trapped on an Island

 ?desert city? island?

perth is not an island nor a desert.
Its a mediteranian climate like greece, and spain.

and thats where my family lives now..

Perth is a small city about 1.75 million,
i think about he size of honolulu.

its a continent my friend, it takes the same flight time to get from Sydney to Perth as Singapore to Perth. 4 hours.
and seriously dont tell me you will drive from the US through mexico down to panama into colombia..

physically impossible becase the jungles in panama are unpassable.
its one of the most inhospitable jungles on the planet, entire armies have dissapeared into it.

sooner or later on your trip you will have to take a ferry, a ship or even a boat.

you cannot escape the sea..

time to embrace it, have you tried living on a boat for a few days?
in did, its not so bad.. i spent it island hopping in thailand.
