Interesting post Gurey it seems Islam was present in China way earlier than we though. Do you have any info of this Muslim chinese leader who was the leader of the
previous rebel group Hongwu was part of.
Hongwu ordered the construction of several mosques in Nanjing, Yunnan, Guangdong and Fujian,[41] and had inscriptions praising Muhammed placed in mosques. He rebuilt the Jinjue Mosque in Nanjing and large numbers of Hui people moved to the city during his rule.[42]
He also wrote a 100 word praise on Islam, Allah and the prophet Muhammad. He had around 10 Muslim generals in his military,[43] including Chang Yuchun, Lan Yu, Ding Dexing, Mu Ying, Feng Sheng and Hu Dahai. It was recorded that "His Majesty ordered to have mosques built in Xijing and Nanjing [the capital cities], and in southern Yunnan, Fujian and Guangdong. His Majesty also personally wrote baizizan [a eulogy] in praise of the Prophet's virtues."[44] In addition, Hongwu's spouse, Empress Ma, can trace her family's genealogy to Islamic ancestors from 10th century China, while Zhu was originally a member of a rebel group that had a Muslim leader named Guo Zhixins .
Hui scholar Yusuf Haji Chang have claimed the Hongwu Emperor was a Muslim, due to his intimate relations with Muslim, but the majority of academics reject this theory.

Well his wife empress ma was muslim, from a long line of hui muslims originally from persia.
Guo Zhixins rebel movement was led by muslims and by accepting Zhu Yuanzhang into the movement i assume they were accepting a fellow muslim.

furthermore empress ma was orphaned and Guo Zhixin was here caretaker, why would you allow a muslim women to marry a non muslim.

it obvious that zhu was a muslim at one stage or another.
