There are Muslims everywhere. It shouldn't be surprising that there would be Muslims in south Sudan considering the north has been victimizing them since the time of the British colonialists. They of course had contact with the majority Muslim north. They of course shared a country with them for so long. South Sudanis usually practice these traditional African religions and even Christianity itself is a minority there. Don't be confused by the Christians in the south who were obviously assisted to flee by churches and now live in the West

The reason why South Sudan separated is because race superiority exhibited by the Arab north. They treated the south Sudanis like crap. Made them slaves. Forced the Arab language on them. There was a war between 1980s to mid 2000s between them. The British gave the north full administration power of the south and started mistreating the southerners. They were mistreated due to racial and religious reasons.

I'm glad South Sudan is independent today. I know a Dinka whose whole village was burned down by those people and only heand a few other kids survived. This war and battle between the south tribes and the north is one of the ugliest in Africa's history

The British gave the north full administration power of the south
Why did the British do that?
The British felt that south Sudan was in no way shape or form ready to be an independent state running its own affairs. All of the British resources and expertise went to north Sudan with very little going to South Sudan. This is not really because the north Sudanis were kissing British asses but because the British didn't really have any power in south Sudan until the 1920s. So, Northern Sudanis got more help establishing their administration and their political structure was better. Initially, the British wanted south Sudan and north Sudan to have independent self-rule but they changed their minds a few years later and made the two Sudans unite for the reasons stated above.

After the British left, 1000 or so government positions were vacated in Sudan. Less than 5 positions were given to people from south Sudan tribes. Northerners discriminating against the southern Sudanis. The British are idiots. They ruined the lives of billions of people on this Earth.
