Somali Migration to Europe & North America

Someone in another thread wondered about:

I am not sure why Somalis decided to immigrate to Europe in the first place considering the other options available.

This has me wondering how the phenomenon of migrating to Europe, North America, Australia, etc started. I remember during the mid 80s some people acquiring Eritrean documentations (ID card, passport, etc) to seek asylum in Europe. I know individuals who went to Germany, Sweden, Finland and the UK between the mid 80s to onstart of the civil war, though I don't know what stories of persecution they claimed or what documentations they had.

Was this period (mid 80s to onstart of civil war) a preparation for the people who will migrate en masse after the start of the civil war? A preparation letting them know where to go for survival? I might sound conspiratorial, but it looks like a staged preparation.

The reason why I say I might sound conspiratorial is, because I wonder if there were no option of migration, how events of the civil war would have folded. With the presence of most of those who migrated (including the educated, intellectuals, doctors, military experts, the police, etc), I think people would have been forced to defend themselves, guard their assets (houses, businesses, etc) and find solutions for lawlessness, chaos, etc.

For disclosure, I left Xamar a year after the start of the civil war.

definitely bro, it is no conspiracy theory, it is well known that if you are to defeat your enemy always leave them an escape route, if indeed those countries had closed their borders to us, we would have stayed and fought for our country instead of deserting it like an army deserts their general when in a tough situation.

The truth is, almost everyone, particularly 1988-1991 who ran away had relatives giving them directions, and those relatives definitely had some support from their local governments, the word got out and everyone capable of fleeing, the elite, the middle class just got the hell out of the country, sealing its fate as a failed state. it is very unfortunate but that is what happened, and it is no conspiracyl.
