A mother's story

Postby waryaa » Sat Sep 08, 2012 9:32 am

A little conversation I had with a Somali mother today will probably never leave my heart. I asked her where she has been hiding all week and told me she was busy because her son who is 18 was getting married. After some back and forth short conv, she said she has eight kids and none of them goes to school. The cheapest school costs 10 bucks per month for each kid and her monthly salary is $60 per month. She has been working over 22 years and can't make ends meet. Her husband also makes like $40 a month. I felt so sorry for those children - but again, it is like that for thousands and thousands of similar poor families. This is what we inherited from this never ending civil war :(

I didn't tell her anything yet but I may sponsor at least some of of the children's schooling. Three are adults now.

Very very sad. I really hope the next government can find the funds to put all children in school for free

I hope you choose to sponsor them  There is nothing more rewarding than giving the child an opportunity in getting an education.

what she expect if she having 8 kids? did she really expect to be able to clothe, feed and school eight children? i doubt it.

i understand people in poor countries tend to have more children (for supposedly economic reasons which don't turn out to be beneficial at all in the long run) but 8 kids seems excessive by any account.
