Question concerning Dams and dry river beds.

Postby ZubeirAwal » Sat Oct 27, 2012 9:30 am

Will Dams be able to capture and hold the river season water that comes in through dry river beds every year?, for example, the Hargeisa river remains dry for almost all year round but in the wet season its filled like a real river for a few months/weeks, before turning dry, if a dam were built will this rain water be held within the river so that it may benifit farmers and land cultivators?

The dry river of hargeisa , if rain falls are controlled and held to a reasonable volume it will have a good effect on energy for windmills, agriculture, farmers and overall the beauty of a city

Do you mean building a reservoir? Reservoirs are man made lakes which are built to hold water. It is usually built in areas where it lacks water.

Not neccesarily a resovoir, across both SL and PL many towns and villages have a huge dry river bed that lies by them, during wet seasons it fills and looks like any usual river, as months go by the water goes away, what i'm saying is will a dam be used to hold the rain falls within the river premises's?

Yeah your right dams are needed to hold the rain falls. During dry seasons there are droughts and during wet seasons there are floods because of lack of dams. The building of dams doesn't look too promising until Somalis build a strong capable government to deal with such issues.

There's good and there's bad that comes with damming. It's not a win-win solution.

There is a 2500 year old technique from persia called qanat, and aflaaj in arabic.
Some of them are still in use and in iran can be as long as several hundred kilometers.

There is more than enough water in northern somalia for agricultural self sufficiency , even more than the huge groundwater reserves.
We need allot of these catchments to store water and divert them to the wells to recharge the groundwater as well.

combined with the abundent windpower, which somalia as a whole is one of the best areas in the world for wind power.
