Trust me it's done to please faraxs I remember when my pops mum was arguing with my mum and pops to take me and my sis to Somalia and get us circumcised when I was like 9 and, they were saying no and my gran said "what men is going to marry them if their vagina hangs down". In places like Sudan and Egypty that might be the case, but with somali tradition it is done because they think it must be carried out for religios reasons. Yes, I know it is wrong but that is what they think. They would say hadan lagu gudin tukan kari maysid and this has to be done before your puperty. I remember my grandmother telling me ' ayeeyo, tukan kari meysid hadaanan ku gudin'.......I said to her ' ayeeyo aniga hey qalin.

thank you for pointing that out.... if any of this is to be curbed, i firmly believe the message/blame/indictment needs to reach the woman involved to perpetuate the practice. regardless of its origin and who it aims to please, this is a practice put to women by women.Let's not kid ourselves here ladies. It's the women who insist on carrying out this archaic practice just so they can remain in touch with 'custom'. I have seen a lot of families where the husbands explicitly and loudly told their wives to not even think of doing such things to their daughters, the wives still found a way and operated on their girls when they husbands weren't around. Not to mention, it is women who physically perform this shyt with their own hands. Maybe you should preach to them and hope your lecture is heeded because quite frankly, it is, as you said, very primitive.

i should also point out other forms of "female honor" practices that extend to other cultures like breast ironing....again done at the request of the girl's mother.
i agree somali women needs to stop abusing other somali women and abusing faraax too, i may add.
