Do you think the Niqab is a form of oppression?

Postby TeAmo » Sat Nov 17, 2012 12:03 pm

Many people see the niqab as an oppression against women, even some muslims. I remember one time my friend and I (she's a niqabie) were in a train and this asian man came up to us, he had a long beard and everything. We thought he was going to say something nice, but he starting spewing abuse. Saying how she shouldn't wear a niqab, it's oppression etc..

That man is a nut case, he shouldnt shout at strangers. I personally dont believe in wearing it,I think its unnecessary and that it blocks women from living a normal life. It begins with enforced hijabs, then they come for your kids and make them wear it and eventually its your face thats the problem and by the time they're done with you they tell you its a sin to leave your house. I personally believe that men should lower their gaze and control themselves or act like normal people. Women are not perpetual sex objects/fitna and all that rubbish. If men are that uncontrollable they shoud be locked up and not entertained by covering a woman's goddamn face.

I'm sorry to disappoint you but unlike the west, Muslim women aren't pieces of meat, they have modesty and dignity, anyone can see who is really oppressing who here.

Its a personal choice that requires a lot of patience and a lot of sacrifice. Its not oppression because women are not forced to wear it. They also say hijabis are oppressed do you agree with that too?

Hijab is a necessity in Islam, niqab is made up by nomadic traditions.

Gedo girl what if the woman wears it by choice?

I remember the EDL leader Tommy Robinson, saying that the girls who 'choose' to wear it are mentally oppressed and forced to believing its a choice, but really it's not. He also added, "of course some of them will choose to wear it, when the Quran tells them that if they don't cover and men look at them they will be in hell".

Actually niqab is a strong Sunnah. When the verse of the hijab came down, ALL of the women at that time, ripped their aprons and covered their faces.

I heard it was curtains and even then there was no commandment and we dont know who these women are as they are not named.

I was thinking of all the women in places like Afghanistan who are forced to cover their faces. If you choose to wear a niqab its like choosing to wear a poncho in my opinion. Just dont ram it down our throats.

YES the niqab is not a dress. or even mandatory in the Quran It's not even a dress code. It's just a manifesto of political Islam, implying medieval oppression imposed by tribal Muslim men on women.

Unfortunately, some 'liberals' here in the west and so-called human rights activists are supporting women who want to be unequal to men and segregated from society by putting veils on their faces.
but they forget that if they lived in Muslim countries they would have been enforced to wear that ugly garment.
i think it should be banned everywhere.

First of all, a piece of cloth covering your face is never an oppression unless someone is forcing you to wear it.

The wives of the Prophet(PBUH) wore niqab and some of our great scholars are of the opinion that it's obligatory so I won't go as far as saying it's a cultural matter or not obligatory in Islam.

In Islam it's either obligatory or recommend. I follow those who say it's recommend.

It's an oppression, one that is reaching from the farthest depths of the past into our present and our future. It is an oppresion to think that our identities are covered from one another, and that we can not look upon anothers face. It is an oppression to know that we live in the 21st century, in a time of great achievements and advances, and to know that some are still shackled by over a millenia of customs. It is oppresion because it is the antithesis of liberty, and what is liberty. Liberty is, to be free of mental slavery, ignorance, and of cultural subjugation. And most certainly, liberty is, the recognition of the individual among the masses, and how can one be freed if they can not be distinguished by the multitude?

My sisters, what subjugation and oppresion it brings, is to deny your individual rights and to take from you your aspirations. If all are one, then to be different is to be constrained. All women will thus be generalized, and will be put into a mold. This mold will be dictated by the customs of the people. These customs will have definite roles for women. The women who will go out from her home will be looked as one who is arrogant, and thinks herself better than all women, because she seeks to educate herself, labor for herself, and dictate her own individuality. Thus, the cause of women will be reversed, and they shall return to their second-class state. What this garment entails is what women have been fighting against and not for, to be free.

Choose liberty my sisters, over oppression. Do not alienate yourself from the means of your individuality.

No, because those who choose it find it liberating.

The niqab is as oppressive as a skirt.
