I remember this from dugsi. The macalim was trying to explain why we have to read dua before going to the loo because we could be stepping on their families etc and that even though they have rationality theirs isnt the same as ours because they live in a different world. The last bit was to explain why they possess people sometimes when we dont know what we've done to them. Have you not seen someone who is possessed? They will ask for the weirdest things/foods and list a million things you did to them. I dont have any hadith though so you may take all of this with a pinch of salt.

Defending your children sounds completely rational to me. Reason for possession varies. Perhaps if you count love as an irrational thought or behaviour, maybe lol.

I've seen plenty folks who were possessed. None ask for food or weird things. It seems possessed people asking for food and listing bereavements is a Somali phenomenon, one I've only come across online.
